    Default Help with sumps

Hi all, Can anyone out there point me in the direction of a complete idiots guide to setting up a sump. I know very little about them but will be setting up a new 5ft tank in a few weeks and from looking on this forum a sump seems to be the way to go. I dont want to get my tank drilled so would like to know if I can still have a sump, where I can get one from without being ripped off and whatever other equipment I need. Please note I am a noob at this hobbie and need my hand holding.
    Thanks again.

Thanks, a start at least, call me thick if you like but if you are draining water from the main tank into a sump what stops accident like 50g of water soaking my carpet and my wife filing for divorce.

Basically you drill a hole in the main tank then you suround this hole with a box that is open at the top the water that overflows this box goes itno the sump via some pipe, the return pump is turned off the water level only drops to the hieght of the "box", the water in the sump is then returned to the main tank with a pump, the flow rate from sump to tank and from tank to sump are equal if set up correctly

You have a weir at the water level you want to maintain. Normally, water drains out of the tank, through the weir and into the sump. There, it gets pumped back to the tank via a return pump.

If the electricity fails, water will continue to drain from the main tank into the sump. However, once the water level drops below the level of the weir, it can't drain any more meaning you'll only get a few gallons (hopefully!!) extra in the sump - which you should account for by not running your sump too full.

Took me 2 carpet floods to work that one out (as a newbee);)
I also drilled a hole in the return pipe, sitting in the rear of tank, so once water level drops and air enters return pipe reverse flow is stopped and no floods:)
