Hi,
Hard to say but it looks like it could be a bacterial infection. Did you notice and cuts or abrasions around that area?
Two things you could do, first is make sure that you keep up on water quality and feed New Era flake or other food with Beta Glucan. You really need to get the fish's immune system boosted to help fight it off.
If feeding frozen food get the New Era Aegis spray and use as instructed or Kent Zoe or Waterlife Vitazin and soak in the fridge overnight.
Keep an eye on this and if it continues to grow be ready with the second option of hospital tank and remove the fish to it. Treat the hospital tank with Myxazin or some other antibacterial remedy. If the infection persists you may have to speak to your vet and get some antibiotics to treat gram-negative bacteria.

its possible nicked itself on a rock and has got an infection,as long as it is feeding ok most normally heal themselves in time but keep an eye on it.derek
