Depends alot on the species as Kev has said. I have seen some peacock mantis at well over a foot long!

The smasher types of mantis are very aggressive to inverts, in that it will eat them, not so sure of aggressiveness with fish though.

thats a spearer instead of a smasher Rob. The spearer are well known for eating smallish fish. I would have thought that yellow one is about 4-6" long.

I've got a wee one - he'll only grow to about 3" max and is quite happy in a 7g tank. If you want an idea on the differences in sizes and behaviour check out Dr Roy's ID site:

    http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthrop...raca/royslist/

They are great fun and have lots of personality. If you keep it well fed, the chances of it taking out tankmates diminish greatly. Mine has a purple crab, blue leg hermit, red leg hermit, blue knuckle hermit, astrea snail, 2 peppermint shrimp and a firefish for company and hasn't tried to eat any of them in the 6 months they have all been together. He has eaten a couple of IO snails though but that was fun to watch
