Maybe there's not a lot to see yet?
I'm sure you'll get more comments once you stick some livestock in there....but don't do any of that for a few weeks yet, now its all down to cycling.
No point running any carbon or floss this early though you'll end up chucking it in a couple of weeks anyway but you need all the bacteria to stay in your tank tank not in the filter.
Same with the skimmer, set it up by all means but no point running it as you've no livestock in there for it to skim their waste.
Out of interest why are you running an external filter?
Did it come with the tank or something?

Love the video clip, especially the soundtrack..."Welcome to jingly jangly jungle!" :-)

What have you got planned for the tank then mate?
Decided what's going in it then?....Don't say a shoal of tangs, folk get upset when people say things like that!

i would be inclined to run the skimmer carbon and phos. the skimmer will remove any crap caught up in the rock and get it bedded in for when you start stocking. be a good time to give the rock a good going over with some blasts from a turkey baster. the phos remover will remove any phos bound up in the rock. and the carbon will keep the water nice and clear.

I was lucky with my first tank as it was a complete breakdown
so it didnt take long for the levels lower to keep livestock.
but have been reading about nutrafin cycle being used to
speed up the cycle.also there is one of the zeo chemicals
produced for cycling tanks but then thats a whole new bag of worms lol.

has anyone else heard of chemical cycling??

Don't worry we're reading lol. Looks like a great start Ray and looks like you have most the bases covered. This will sound a pain but my advise would be for the 1st two months of the tanks like change the activated carbon (AC) once a week, yeah a pain I know and with AC your best to use a little but change often. After two months as the tank cycles then just change once a month.

    Good luck

It will take longer without a bio-load (fish etc) infact without a bio-load I'm not sure how the live sand will work (never used bought live sand). Try and get a cup full of sump crud form a LFS out of thier live rock tank, this will raise the ammonia level and then the cycle will start.

I was suggesting going without carbon floss etc for now simply because of the amount of crud and spikes you'll be changing it every week like Timo says, I'd be tempted to just run floss to catch crud? Or if you don't mind changing it all the time carry on with the carbon etc.

You can speed up cycling if you like by adding Dr.Tim's "One & Only", this is the nitrifying bacteria that you need in a bottle...it was Dr Tim that discovered the denitrifying bacteria that we all now take for granted, one of the many things he's done for the hobby, I used his "Re-Fresh" and "Waste away" recently with great results, cleared up my algae and cyano problems really well.

I've not used it myself but it has great reviews if you run it through google.

I love watching new tanks develop :-)
