    Default goldfish

After the long winter I'm now filling in my 21' x 17' pond as I lost all my koi to the cold but about 100 goldfish came throught ok, I'm keeping 40 to go in a smaller pond so I have 60 up for grabs, some are 2" up to about 5" some are changing colour now.

    I'm open to offers

You lost koi due to the cold? If the pond is deep enough, well circulated with an open to the air surface this can't happen.

I'd agree, pictures are what I came home from work to find on 8th January. Two filters had frozen and emptied all but 4" of water from pond. Only filter still working was insulated in the wee hut you can see in picture taken on Xmas day. All 5 big Koi survived, filled pond straight away, used only insulated filter and left frozen filters of. Only re-started them last weekend. Lesson learned pumps now on high ledges and all filters to be lagged this summer to protect them. If my guys survived this yours should have too!

21x17' and 5 1/2 ' deep pond been running for 9 or 10 years the ice was that thick you could park a car on it and your saying it can't happen Hmmm, r60sgr I'm sorry if you call that ice on your pond I would have to laugh a lot. there are carp fishing pond not far from me and they don't have any help through winter and the ponds might be 10' max and some of the carp maybe 10 years old so been through many winters but this winter some of them carp didn't make it and your saying it can't happen.

snow, rain and ice are acidic so alot of ponds have had huge PH spikes this year, most people blaming the frozen water rather then testing the water, obviously this is not in all cases. it can happen and will happen, poor fishes.

Only trying to offer advice that more likely to be other cause. 20+ years with various ponds and losing fish to ice never happened. Always made sure air hole was maintained and tested water regularly thru winter. If it was ice related I think even goldfish would have perished but they are hardier than Koi. Suggest you check all is ok with parameters if you're going to try Koi again. Nobody laughing here I can assure you.

I see now, never thought of that happening to me. Real shame. You live & learn though. I have my pump elevated & my box is dug into the earth which will insulate to some extent. Good thread.

No problem buddy, understand the disappointment and frustration. Luck plays a part too - If I hadn't got lucky and noticed my pond had nearly emptied my fish would have perished that night for sure! Hope it hasn't put you off trying again. My pond's not nearly the size yours was and Koi quite happy just can't keep that many or breed them. Great to watch though.
