    Default Nitrate Reducer

    Hi all,

Thought I'd give it a go making my own nitrate reducer coil. Bought about 10m of airline tubing from B-B-Q. This was a mistake as it's much cheaper elsewhere. Got a small pump (260lph) that was salvaged from a skip outside an LFS in the southwest. Went in and asked if I could have it and they said no probs.

Put together pump, coil, control tap and bucket of tank water with dead sprats and skimmer waste. A drop every second or so. 2 weeks later and I have a result! It works.

    Pic of setup:

Pic of results. Test done with Salifert kit. Comparison of bucket water and coil output.

did a bit of reading on this, when dollydip was having trouble with nitrates, was gonna build him one of these. not sure how yours is working reefcoral. the unit itself isn't sealed, as the main body need to be sealed so that anaerobic bacteria can colonise the bioballs (which aren't there) in the unit. coil denitrators take 5-6 weeks to start working. the length of the coil needs to be carefully calculated, the unit also should not allow light in???

    some reading
