Well, I would have to say no, they are not entirely reef safe.

However, that doesn't mean you can't keep one in a reef tank. You just have to be prepared that some of your corals, especially LPS corals, may get eaten. The other reason they are not entirely good in a reef is because a majority of large angels are exactly that...very very large.

FWIW I have an emperor angel...who has eaten all my zoas, my green open brain, my hammer & my frogspawn and is liable to grow to up to 15" in length and a good 6" in width. But he's gorgeous and I love him ;)

there are no angels which you can guarentee are reef safe, some pose less of a problem than others. two of the best ones people keep in reef tanks are the majestic and regal angel both can nip at corals but pose less of problem than some.the genicanthus group of angels are excellent with corals according to most people who have kept them, they only pick at the odd sponge not bothering hard or soft corals.i have kept quite a few out of this group of angels without any problems, also i have kept the regal and majestic without any problems.the only large angel i have had problems with was an emperor which would eat all my small polyps, xenia and would pick at large leather corals but other people have kept emperors with no problems at all.derek

All fish have their own character, it's a bit of a suck it and see. It depends a lot on the size of the reef tank a lot too. If you can keep the fish well fed it tends to keep the fish content, but you must be cautious as not to overfeed and watch those nitrates. As said above, they will peck at corals. Even fish that has been in a reef with no probs for years , can wake up 1 day and feast on 1 of your favourite corals.:( I do like majestic angels myself and have a good few customers with them in their reef.:)

i have kepp asfur angels in a reef system without much of a problem.he would pick at xenia and small polyps but would attack a lot of the other fish especially my majestic angel and dwarf angels.this was his main problem, the only fish which he left alone were an emperor angel, blue ring angel and a queen angel which were a lot larger than him.derek
