Hi Phil you dont clean sumps or have ex filters on a marine system, the filter is your live rock and a good skimmer, and if you have a DSB that will when its on line will consume all the crud. You need about 6 inch of sand over an area a quarter the size of the tank bottom, so your 4x2x2 will want a DSB of 2x1 of sugar fine sand so that the critters etc can burrow into it. HTH Twiggy:D

Some people run a wave maker in their sump to keep it clean and push most of the junk towards the skimmer.

I’d recommend prefiltering your overflow with a 200 micron filter bag washed out 1 or 2 times per week. This will catch all the larger detritus with the skimmer helping to process the finer particles. Then have your biological filter (DSB, plenum, etc) the other side of a couple of baffles followed by another set baffles and then return pump. Allowing detritus to fall directly onto a sandbed is going reduce effectiveness and longevity.

    Cheers

Hi Phil a Eheim 1260 or New jet 2300 should be ok, or any thing around the 2000 lph mark will do. Twiggy:D:D
