    Default Newbie to Corals

    HI all my first thread,

In my opinion my tank is doing really well, all levels are fine and I have some freebie corals growing on my live rock. I now want to take the plunge and by some frags. What is the easiest and most resilient to keep and most of all how do I add them to my tank (placement etc).

    Many Thanks in advance

    Hi and Welcome

Mushrooms & Zoa's are both good first corals - very hardy

Might be worth posting a pic up of your freebie corals just to make sure they are not nasties like majano or aiptasias

What tank have you got - size, lighting, pumps (flowrate) etc?

Most people start with soft corals such as ricordeas, mushrooms, zoanthus, green star polyps which areall reasonably easy if you have decent params. Also finger corals, leathers etc.

Someone else will have to advise on SPS / LPS (i'm sure they will) as i'm not really into those yet being a newbie myself.

Your lfs (if it's any good) should be able to advise on location re lighting, flow & placement. For fixing, some can be just placed in & wedged slightly if on LR frags, others will need to be fixed down using milliput or similar, but be warned this stuff is an oxygen depleter, so only do a bit at a time.

Do you have a decent lfs near you? If not, I can recommend Paul @ Ocean Corals in York (site sponsor). I don't go anywhere else now, excellent stock & knows his stuff so well worth a visit.

Big purple disc shaped one is a mushroom - nice freebie. It's surrounded by star polyps, also goodies, so you've done okay there.

Not sure about the circular one in the top pic. A bit fuzzy for me to positively ID

Good advice from both Pitlet & Ian and very kind words regarding O,C thanks Ian mean alot.... Over the next few days i will be putting together some really nice Zoa frag packs. If you are interested keep your eyes pealed as they will be on a new thread very soon. If you are very in York pop in and have a coffee and we'll talk about some good starter corals. But take things nice and slow, dont rush mate. :)

    All the best

    Paul
