Not sure on return pump-it depends what you are having in your sump. I find the best way to set water level is to fill main tank up until it starts to overflow into sump then keep it overflowing (without return pump on) until you are happy with the sump level. This way if you ever have a power out your sump won'ty overflow and end up with wet carpets.:D
i would have thought a water level of anywhere around 8-12 ish inches. you need to allow for when your pumps turn off and the water in the pipes and in "transit". you'll be surprised how much water is used to get the height of the tank level over the weir etc. return pump i would prolly look at something around the 6000lph mark. maybe an ehiem 6045 or an or6500, so you're gonna need to think of what pump so you can get the appropriate sized pipe work. what are you gonna have in your sump?
skimmer, dsb, mud, cheato?
thanks Gaters i have the sump tank but have to build the insides so not sure what height to set the baffles, still not sure whats going in live sand poss miracle mud

do a google search for miracle mud analysis, i would just stick with a dsb, but do a bit of reading.
drop an oceanrunner in pal 6500 great return pump![]()
You should have 2 thirds of the area of your tank for a dsb. So if the tank is 6x2x2 your dsb should be 4x2x2 or equivalent and around 5-no more than 6 inches deep. If you can't fit this space in your sump tank then the dsb will be fairly innefficient and you would be better putting algae in there and light it.
