    Default clown fish

milzeh said in his thread that his clowns couldn,t swim in a straight line to catch pods! well thats why l think clowns should only be kept with anemones because they can not swim properly or in a straight line as in the wild they only swim close to there host and only venture out to catch food l have never seen any clowns swimming along like any other fish what do u think alan:icon_razz::icon_razz::icon_razz:

surely they shouldn't be kept in a tank with anything that could predate them? the nem is mainly used by the clown as protection from predators. i can see the pro's and con's of keeping them with nems. it's only really perc type clowns that don't swim "properly". most other clowns are very good swimmers ime. btw i keep mine with a nem.

l.ve got three types of clown and all swim the same rather jerkily, even young clowns stay close to nems as its in bred into thier minds as they stay close to the host they do not really need to be good swimmers as they rarely travel more than a few feetun like most other fish alan:icon_razz::icon_razz:

yep & black & white ones are like percs in disguise. They take food from the middle of the water body but if a bit hits the sand bed they'll starve rarther than go down & pick it off the bottom. What nem stays small & doesn't need alot of light?

I do agree that clowns prefer to have their natural host, however I think it's also necessary to be careful with this recommendation purely because the clownfish are the most common reason for taking on this hobby.

Then shortly afterward, two tank bred clownfish go into the fairly new tank. If the more inexperienced hobbyists believe they should provide a nem for their new pets then the potential for loss is very high and is more likely to impact the reefs. A nem is very difficult to keep and I had a very big learning curve to keep mine healthy.

Clowns can be more than happy to host a large colony of inexpensive cultured zoos, leathers etc and should be the first choice for beginners wishing to provide a host.
