brown slime algae
hi all, im having trouble with brown slime algae. it only seems to be appearing on the sand. last time i tested the water the results were....nitrates 5-10ppm, phos 0.01, can anyone help? dont know if this makes any difference but it gets air bubbles in it, why? cheers DAN

How long has the tank been running? Is the sand new?

tank been running for 15 months now, i have added new sand but im sure it was there before that

it is probably being caused by the new sand due to the silica in the sand it will ease off once the new sand matures up

Its normal after adding new sand. You can get silica/phosphate remover which would help.

as stated this usually happens after putting in new sand but should go away quite quickly.derek

Red algae in a mat is cyanobacteria. Its growth is fuelled by low oxygen and high organics. However, it sounds like you have a case of dinoflagellates. They can be really persistent. Your phosphate is high for reef.
Dinoflagellates are usually fuelled by just one thing, phosphate input on a regular basis. Check your R/O and check the aquarium. Gregh and I had all sorts of trouble with his dinoflagellate problem. If it persists I can come in and sort it out for you.

Dino is a real pain, I have been plauged with it for months, tried everything and just when I think I have got on top of it the stuff returns as bad as ever.
At times it driven to thinking about giving up.
