Peppermint shrimp

I've heard mixed things about these, some people swear by them some just at them. I know they can eat aptasia but do they eat corals and such too? Would it be that they'll eat aptasia like corals (i.e. xenia and star polyps) Is it that they'll eat aptasia if nothing else is available or what? Just not sure whether they'd actually end up being more of a problem than a help.

some people have seen them eating zoos, never had them, prefer the red hot screwdriver to get rid of aips.

Mines never been any problem, comes out at feeding time and i've never seen any damage on anything.

But then thats part of the hobby, the exception to the rule.......

Got a couple from a Lfs about a year ago never seen em since mind you not got much probs with aips but would go with traditional methods of boiling water with care or even jif lemon in a syringe or even the kalk paste method I have used all and with great success:),

scott, you saw my tank bud,there are at least 5 pepermints in there, never seen them do damage and as you saw the bloody regals the real rogue coral wise, however i still have a few glass nems many months down the line

I did indeed and it's what made me ask. I don't mind having a few, I can't see that they'll ever stop if conditions are right unless you are stupidly lucky! I just want them controlled is all. It's my own fault I let a few build and then got some berghia that just vanished. The I lost interest and let it get way beyond a joke. In the tank at work I have been using white vinegar and it really screws them up but I can't get everywhere in the tank so I want something that can.

As far as I can see I have the options of a copperband or racoon butterfly or peppermints. It's just deciding which is the lesser evil really.

personally i would be looking at a small copperband,its just getting a good one, hard to find though, macca could be your best bet, what i would do though would be cultivate some glass nems in a small tank to keep the thing with food if its a fussy eater

look into Forcipiger flavissimus and Forcipiger longirostris im sure they are as good as copper bands for pest nems

The most reliable way is manual removal.

You have already said that shrimps are unpredictable... what about the fish? what if they dont eat them? what if they eat them all then start on corals? Copperbands dont have the best survival rate in captivity anyway.

If you get the shrimps, make sure you get the true peppermints.

I still think the best way would be to get some rock out, nuke the aips, then move onto some more rock. Its gonna be slow and painfull, but thats why they are called pest anemones:D
