Hi everyone

As I mention in my introduction post - I've beeen dropped in the deep end with an established reef tank - but no instructions :(.

I know what the fish are, but the corals are abit confusing:confused:.
I'm hoping you can id these so I can work out what to feed etc.

I think the first pick is candy can coral second is button polyp, 3rd ill have to pass on that one, 4th is a type of acan,5th is a leather soft coral and the last is a cathedral coral will have white polyps exposed when settled lovely Coral IMO

Just one other thing not being rude or funny in anyway but you stock levels need looking at 4 YTs is far too much and a predatory lion fish with smaller dinner sized fish is not a great idea if he gets hungry one day he will not hesitate at all

HTH
good luck

Nice tank.
Bottom two pics and leather corals, softies and don't need feeding. Your placement in your tank looks fine for them as they like moderate flow. Top one looks like candy cane not sure on feeding, second one button polyps no direct feeding required, third not sure? and fourth is an open brain and again might benefit from target feeding?
Others will be along to perhaps confirm.

What size tank is it?

I only spotted 3 Yellows, but agree might be too much for your tank size?

Well this is how the tank came - apparently it's been up for about 2 years.
So far - have only had it for a week, but every one seems ok - they all recovered from the move very quickly. I did have concerns about the lionfish x2, but they do grow on you - we make sure they are well feed (but not too much as apparently they are piggys). There is no problems at the moment between tankmates, there are lots of hiding places, the rocks were placed to there are lots of caverns.
The tank is 300ltrs. But we will be vigiliant.

Thanks everyone for the info on the corals - I tried researshing them before but there's so much variety even under 1 name!.

Thanks again
Lisa

Hi Lisa, as others have said the 4th pic is a brain coral-look up trachyphillia. Also have a good read on volitans lion fish (you can see it in your other thread)-they can grow to 1.5 foot and every other fish, apart from the foxface and other lion, in your tank will be lunch-i'm sorry to say that it's not a case of if but when. I think they take around 3 years to fully grow (but don't quote me on this.) Not only that but they require loads of food and produce loads of waste as a result you will struggle to keep water parameters consistent for a reef tank. To top this all off their spines are venomous as are the fuzzy lion's and the foxface's.

The corals look great as does the rest of the tank-i wish mine had been set up like this when i got it:D:D Gaters

Hi Lisa as others have said about ID on the corals is correct, and they are no problem keeping them just feed the Hard ones and they will reward you. My only concern is the Volitans Lion fish as it is a predater, and will snaffle smaller fish or anything it can get in its mouth. They are best kept in a predater only tank with other large fish and not in a mixed reef setup, i suppose when he was first put in by the previous owner he was pretty small but they do grow fast. The small fuzzy ones are not bad and can be kept, but watch your hands in the tank as they will sting as all lionfish can you when your not expecting it. Also 4 yellow tangs are a bit much in a 300litre tank, if it was a 300 gallon tank there would be no problem but as they grow they get terrertorial and can start fighting each other and picking on the smaller one. It looks like you are keeping it nice and clean, also makes sure you dont get the hard corals near the soft ones as they will sting them and kill them. HTH Twiggy:D:D

Thank you Gators and Tangman

*Sigh* I have to admit the volitan has sneaked herself into our hearts. I guess we need to make a decision about her (she's about 5in long ) and perhaps 2 of the tangs.
Well if anyone is interested - please PM me.

Now - how do I feed a brain coral - where's it's mouth?

Thanks for the photos - I haven't seen the furry bits out on my brain yet - but I did try the turkey baster thing this evening.
