View Full Version : yellow box fish
noticed Zeus not on:( , so can any one help ?---little yellow box fish thats been in quarantine with W/S past few days "had" been showing no other ill effect apart from spots until this morning when i went to dose cuprazin ,i noticed he/she breathing very rapidly ---the 10 ltr quarantine tank that the box fish is in has a large air pump for extra o2 --so does this mean its looking grim for little fish?thanks :)
any one ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?:D
Hi Wilo,
This can mean ammonia posioning or the parasite attacking the gills.
If the parasite is attacking the gills it should pass in day or so but I'd look at the filter in the QT. Do a water change, remember to re-dose the Copper to the volume of incoming new water NOT the whole tank volume again, get some Ammo-lock in there pronto and any Stability or Bacterlife would be great as well. You should also dose Stability or Bacterlife every time you dose Copper, this'll help maintain filter bacteria levels.

CampbellHi Zeus -just done a NH4 TEST ---sky high off the scale:eek:--NO2 -0ppm --done a 90% water change using water from main tank so paras match - but box fish still breathing rapid ---cant get to lfs till morning for ammo lock:(--anything else i can do? thanks for advice :D
Hi Wilo,
Sorry for the dlay getting back to you.
12 hourly (twice daily), or sooner depending on your ammonia test, water changes of 50% will do the trick as your filter matures. Mix up as much new water as you can in one go is best.
Remember to get Stability or Bacterlife.

Oh and I should also say that he may not recover fully from the poisioning and always breathe fast. The gill membranes shrivel as they are burnt by the ammonia and are very slow to heal when damaged in this way.
The best you can do is keep the water tip-top and keep Nitrate (No3) as low as possible as well as making sure that ammonia and nitrite never go above zero.

Campbellthanks m8 -but i fear its to late for the little dude :(:(--he hasn't eaten all day and now he is just sitting on bottom of quarantine tank and top of him has gone very dark yellow -almost black .----do you think its curtains for him?---mrs wilo is gutted -asked if macca can get them as its her fav fish :)
mmm.... doesn't sound too good.
Still don't give up on the little guy just yet. You may want to cut down on his feeding and remove any uneaten food until he's back to normal and don;t worry about him not feeding, he'll be feeling a bit down, just like when you are unwell, just keep up the water changes and hopefully he'll pull through.

Campbellwill do m8 :D-Eric (tangman ) is kindly bringing me some salt from maccas tommorow so if little guy makes it till then -ill be able to do regular water changes ---am gona try get a picture of him in a mo to give you a better idea of his condition :D
omg-looks like he got to stressed and released his toxin -hes defo dead now:(:(and the waters gone mental --bubbling up  foaming right up to lid ---never seen out like it ---so a grim day for me:(,,,,,,iv learned 3 good lessons through all this tho -"1" dont buy fish from lfs that dont know there arse from there elbow -"2" always quarantine first (not after sh*t hits the fan) and "3" if you dont follow first two rules -ask ZEUS cos he really knows his stuff .,,-thanks m8 for your advice through this ;)-will be quarantining all live stock now before it goes in main tank (just hope this is gona be an isolated case :o:).
Ach, really sorry to hear that, poor little fish.
Re: Quarantine, think of it more as isolation, the word quarantine assumes disease whereas isolation, to me anyway, is more akin to rest and recovery, peace and quiet.
Also there is no reason not to enjoy your new fish even in isolation, There are lots of plastic/resin rocks and coral decorations out there that won't be affected by treatments and are easily sterilised if need be. So you could have a nice little display even though it's an isolation tank, and the wife may be happier with that instead of a bare tank in a corner.

oh yes that too:D:D:D--think iv been lucky Eric -no signs of W/S on any of others yet --but cleaner wrasse wont leave powder blue or sail fin alone so think he might be helping out--any fish purchased in future will be placed in isolation for two weeks min now:D

No not yet. I was just asking if you had found a mate for yours. My tank is not ready yet to be restocking. The racoon I bought recently was to clear some aiptasia in a holding vat.
Peter
have been hearing lots of good things about maccas tonight so think ill be ditching lfs now and just using his shop:D--so ill get a price on splendens off macca once i know tank is safe :)
