My blenny experiment is coming along nicely. Added blenny number 4 on Friday - a Starry Blenny:

He's settled in very well and has already ousted my royal gramma from his cave and taken up residence. So I don't think he'll have any problems. There's been one noticeable episode of posturing with my red spot blenny but since then they've pretty much ignored each other and are sticking to their own wee areas.

So far so good.

What Blennies do you have now Gilly?

I also have a Red Spot Blenny, Flame Tail Blenny & Tail Spot Blenny. All 4 are in my 6x2x2. I'm hoping to add one more as I've always wanted a Red Sea Mimic Blenny but I'll see how things settle down territory wise with this lot first.

Wow Blennytastic! ahem.
Good luck with them. I can understand the attraction I have a Bi-Colour Blennie, real character.

lol - it is quite funny watching the gramma. Everytime the blenny leaves the cave the gramma has a scout about but gets chased off again. You can tell he's just waiting for the blenny to slip up.

Scooter Blennies, iirc, are pod eaters as opposed to algae eaters like my lot. So need a larger territory to provide enough food for them. My experience with the blennies I have are that they pretty much hang around their own wee territory, seeing off intruders but otherwise keeping themselves to themselves. The exception being my Flametail which is a combtooth and is pretty much free swimming like the fang blennies. He roams the tank but none of the other blennies take any notice of him.

At last i have begun my new venture!! Picked up my tank last week and filled it with RO water on tues night. Added the salt and got water temp upto 24 degrees - tested salinity etc. Added my live rock on saturday and coral sand. Ive gone for a DSB. Was sat looking at my tank last night totally mesmorised and there's nothing in it yet. When i looked more closely there is a small mushroom growing on some of the rock and some xenia. I had to look twice at one point thought i was seeing things as the rock was actually moving!! it turned out to be a snail and a rather large one!! i'm so excited. Now is the hard bit - the wait before i can add any livestock. got to wait at least 4 weeks and take a water sample into Marine Tech - whom i must add are the reason behind me moving to marines. They really wetted my appetite. Anyone new to the game should go see these guys they are so friendly and ofer great impartial advice!!

A big thankyou from me fellas!!

Nice one Jambon. Its a great feeling once all the rock goes in. Really feels like your getting somewhere at last and freebies just put the icing on the cake. You'll find that rock watching will become your number 1 pastime and everyone else will think your nuts. Just stick with it and ignore them ;)

Loved rock watching, couldn't believe how much life came off the last batch I put in.

Also have a bicolour blenny, what a character - sits on the highest rock and just watches everybody go by.

Brings back memories, all this talk of rock watching. Can't do this any more, every square inch of live rock is covered in coral. :D

Gilly as you seem to be our resident Blennie expert is the term 'Algae Blenny' a general coverall term? As the Algae Blennie my dad has seems to be dead the same as your Starry Blennie even down to the blueish spot on the tail.

Gilly as you seem to be our resident Blennie expert is the term 'Algae Blenny' a general coverall term? As the Algae Blennie my dad has seems to be dead the same as your Starry Blennie even down to the blueish spot on the tail.

IME the term Algae Blenny is usually used when referring to Salarias fasciatus (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=94) also equally commonly called a Lawnmower Blenny. The Starry Blenny is a different species, Salarias ramosus (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=2263).

However, as they are fairly closely related and have similar habits I suppose they could come under the generic term of algae blenny but I haven't seen it used in this context before. I'd be inclined to say your dad has a Starry Blenny and then there's no confusion.

The pics were taken using a Canon EOS 300D DSLR. Its the old version now but is still really good for what we use it for, ie taking pictures of our tanks ;)

The DSLR's are well worth the money ime.

Blennies are really cool fish. There's a thread on Reef Central at the moment with lots of pics of blennies and gobies (surprise surprise, there are a few of mine on it ;) ) and there is a Tiger Blenny on that which is awesome but apparently very very rare. There's also a lot of talk in the States about Barnacle Blennies but I've never seen them over here. Might be worth a look ;)

Here's a link to the thread (http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=942130)anyway.
