Hi

I am a new member and also new to marine fish. My tank is not yet set up, but I am looking forward to getting started.

Just wanted to ask, can I put live sand on top of ordinary sand to create a deep sand bed or should it all be live?

Hi Vicki, welcome to Reef Corals ;)

If you mean the bagged live sand and adding it to you main display, you are just as well not bothering. Inert sand will be seeded by your liverock and will become live in no time.

If, however, you mean as a DSB in your sump, you are much better using inert sand and adding a handful of donated live sand from someone else's tank or from your lfs.

I've used the bagged stuff but that was because I couldn't get the right grain size in anything else at the time. Its not really necessary.

Thanks guys. I will need to ask lots of questions so I am glad to know there is so much support.

I wanted the live sand for in the tank not a sump. I do plan to have plenty of live rock, but would still like to add some live sand to start things off. Can I add it to normal sand?

Hi Vicki, welcome to the site and im sure eeryone here will try and answer your questions.

I know how difficult it can be being new to marines, I have just recently set up my first tank.

Before you add any sand you should add your rocks ...... a few fish out there like digging HOLES.

Once thats done you can add you sand, and then your live sand on top of that sand.
In my opinion you dont really need live sand, as your live rock has plenty or organisms on it ready to be unleased into your tank. Thus creating live sand.

But be sure to allow your tank to cycle before adding any livestock.
If you havent got a test kit get yourself one.

I hope that this has helped

Thanks. I have got all the test kits and will try to be very patient and wait the appropriate length of time before adding any fish etc.:) :)
