Hello folks!

Finally getting round to introducing my slice of reef after lurking around here for a couple of weeks. Was introduced to the site by Ian of Marine Tech during a business trip over to Hull.

Been growing my Blackpool based reef for the past 8 years. Over this time it has seen some major changes and upheavals such as moving house (never again) and a stock transfer to a bigger tank.

What you see in the piccies is basically a converted Juwel 450 with sump and LR based filtration. Coral stock has gradually migrated towards SPS and LPS; hence halides, Calcium Reactor & Calc Stirrer.

Prized specimens include my Malu Heteractis Anemone I have kept for over 6 years and a Catalaphyllia I have had for about 18 months.

Had a major fish wipe-out about 18 months ago when electrics tripped during summer hols (corals all survived). So most stock is fairly young and includes Juv Majestic Angel, Foxface, Pair Common Clowns, Pyjama Tang, Bangaii Cardinals, Scarlet Hawk, Madarin, Chromis and a Blue Throat Trigger.

Despite 8 years of obsessive reefing, still challenged with problems! Currently trying to resolve a long standing Cyano issue I am currently attributing to 'Old Tank Syndrome' and systematically addressing through a major system refresh.

Hopefully can lend my experience to this board and also learn from others' experiences in this fantastic hobby.

Welcome to the board Mark. Your tank is stunning, despite your problems, so you must be doing something right ;)

Just to let you know, I'll post out your chaeto on Monday. The envelope arrived today and I didn't want to send it straight back out in case it doesn't arrive tomorrow. Its fine for a couple of days but wouldn't want to it to get left in the cold for 3 days :)

Hi there Mark

Cheers. Pretty nice pics there, and 8 years old too. Hopefully you will crack the issues facing you at the moment.

You have a wealth of knowledge and experience tied up in that system, and I look forward to learning from your experiences.

Thanks for posting the photo's.

Thanks for the kind comments folks. I'll keep you updated on my cyano campaign! Next step is to add an ozonizer.

Thanks for sending me the chaeto Gillybaby - will be interesting to see how a fresh crop grows.

cheers

Hi Mark
Lovely tank, got any tips on the cyano front as Im battling it too!!

First suspects for cyano are flow and nutrients. Getting these right cure cyano in most cases. Also worth trying a major water change (say 50%) syphoning all the cyano out in the process.

However... I have a couple of streams running and P04 / N03 are testing negligable. Others have reported success with Aqua Medic's Anti-Red - no good for me though!

How old is your system and what's flow / nutrient like?
