Hi

I PM'd a member the other day, who has never posted, but sends lots of private messages. I encouraged this person to post, and the answer was that he / she has a Cyano problem, and did not wish to post a system picture until this was cleared up. Not that this is a problem, jusy want to help.

In all my reefkeeping years, I have never experienced an out break of Cyano. Although I do have some awareness of a cure.

Anyone experienced this and what cures were used, to possibly help this member?

best thing this person can do is get on say hi and receive a warm welcome..post some tank details up, incl flow, lighting etc what methods of feeding and maintainence they do etc then we can start from there.

fwiw i have an algae problem on my sand that i cant shift, no matter what i do and i practice what i preach! and it still wont budge

I've had experience of cyano twice - once in my 55g tank and once in my 160g tank. So if I can help I will but it would be useful to have some of the details suggested by Steve.

FWIW we combated the cyano by increasing the flow, thereby eliminating deadspots, syphoning out as much as possible during water changes, keeping phosphates & nitrates as low as possible and then giving the bacteria time to exhaust its food supply. Both outbreaks cleared up suddenly after a couple of months.

I've had Cyano for a while now (if you look at the pics I posted you can just see it). I increased flow in the old system I had to no avail, syphoned and even got my hand in and peeled the stuff off, it still came back.
Anyway my new system, I'm trying at the minute some red tipped hermits (thank you james!) as Marine Tech posted a link that recommended them. Cut my feeding right back. Water flow should be fine I got approx 100 litres tank and a Seio 2,400 lph powerhead. I do have another 1,000lph powerhead shall I add it in? Got Rowaphos in and doing regular 10% water changes. Fully stocked with clean up crew anyway so no uneaten food should be laying around for too long. Its a bit of a nightmare to be honest its not going!
Help!
