I am thinking of getting an anemone for my large marroon clown and thought I would ask for your opinions first on:

1. which species of anemone would suit (preferably a colourful one),

2. the best way to introduce it (I did put a H. gelam in with her a few years ago and she loved it :smooch: - almost too much, see photo!).

3. would it be OK in a tank already containing softies

Any other advice most welcolme.

Thanks in advance. Chris :)

the only anemone they host in nature is the bubble tip but they will reside in other anemones, such as carpet anemones and heteractis species.their preference is always a bubble tip. as long as your tank is mature over 6months old no problem but if they do not like the position they are in or water flow they will move and sting anything in their path so be warned.derek

When I put the Heteractis gelam in a few years ago, she loved it almost too much, hosting it almost immediately. Do you recommend trying to keep her away from it for a while to allow it to 'settle in', if so for how long and how??

she looks quite large for that nem. i would have thought a radius of a minimum of twice the length of the clown, preferably 3 times. re letting the nem settle in, as long as the nem is big enough it should cope. maroons can be quite boisterous, and most clowns attempt to cajole a nem into settling in hence having one big enough to cope.

Thanks for the advice, Cl0wn & Moorish. Looks like I need to get a 8-12 inch nem as the clown is 4" now .

the anemone needs to be at least 4-5 larger than the clown otherwise they can cause problems with the anemone.i would just let the clown go in as soon as the nem has settled in after a few days.derek

Wow, how big do they get, sounds like I need to re-assess don't know if my 180 litre tank can accomodate a 16-20" nem!!
