The key to keeping hermits from stealing snail shells is to litter the bottom of your tank with lots of different sized empty shells for the hermits to move into when needed. IME they much prefer going for empty shells than all the hard work of ejecting snails from theirs.

As said, Mexican Red Tips are easily the best and most hard working hermits. But I like me critters so have a mixed variety of Mexican Red Tips, Red Legs, Blue Legs, Orange Claws, White Tips and Common Algae Hermits. The choice, as they say, is yours ;)

Kev it depends what kind of shell it is. 40p a shells could be very cheap depending what animal it came from. There is shell companies online that sell 1 shell for $30+ dollars etc.

Hi James

I have just never thought of this before. But on reflection and your info, it is actually reasonable!
