i plan to keep a mandarin in the future and want to make a refugium.
what is the simpliest way this can be done. cheap would be nice
Im in the process of making a refugium for my system:D
I think it all depends on where it will be situated? the room you have how your system is set up. The cheapest way is prob to buy a tank of ebum or something like that then get it drilled etc it all depends on how you want it so more info would be good
hth cheers

i would prefer it to be a hang on as my cabinet could only hold a small tank.
I was going to go hang on as They sell them on ebay quite cheap!
saves all the hassle and prob will be as cheap! They do them in different sizes too, but if you want to make it Id suggest searching on the net for pics info on refugiums and design your own first as you need to find the best way to pump the water through the refu and back into the tank without risk of overflowing, and to get final sizes for glass etc. If you want to make it let me Know and ill explain how im doing it if you want to get an idea:)
hth cheers

i have a percula 120 and ill be having a massive FUGE for it. because i simply do not want to drill my tank. ill just have a 1,500 lph pump , pumping out of the tank into a 3x2x1.5ft tank above my main display tank. and this will have 3 compartments. 1 in 1 refugium 1 out . simple as that. im having my tank made.
deffinatly worth having a fuge and im glad u relise manderians need lots of pod life etc so youve done ur research not only will it feed ur manderians but also other fish and inverts in the tank. i wud havee it up a running for about 5-6 mounths before you introduce the manderian.

i read that you have to use an overflow box to get water from the aquarium to the refugium as it is impossiable to get it right using 2 pumps
is this true?
Spot on, you will end up with a big mess and an empty tank.

so if the power went out would water still flow down from the overflow and into the refugium but the pump would not be returning the water so the refugium would over flow causing a big puddle on my floor.
or is there some sought of shut off system
I have had one of these in the past. The syphon will stop when the pump goes off. It was set up that when the pump restarted, it started syphoning again with no priming.

would u say that it is quite a simple task and cheapish.

so how do i get the flow from the tank and back into the tank the same

If you use a overflow box you have to have a pump with a tap in the return pipe to control the flow back to the tank. It takes a bit of fine tuning but it can be done. HTH. Eric
mine required no tuning. You pumped faster, it syphoned faster, slower, and it syphoned slower and so on.
I have made a pod refugium that lives on the brace bar of my tank and feeds via gravity into the tank. It works well.
This was made from about 6 pieces of glass and cost about £20 to make. This includes the glass, 2 pieces drilled and the silicone.
If you would like more information let me know.
Thanks

Some things for a re-design. Outlet hole needs to be twice the size as the inlet hole. Check your sizing for the brace bar and make the length small enough to have room on both ends.
Hope this helps.
