View Full Version : True Peppermint shrimp id plz
I am looking for a true peppermint shrimp to help with the Aiptasia problem i have in my nano tank.
My LFS has two what he calls "dancing shrimps" they look like this pic below, very dark red with broad white stripes. Are these peppermint shrimps? will they eat Aiptasia?

In a previous tank i had 100s of aips-due to letting my dad introduce some live rock his mate had given me while i was on holiday:(-by the time i'd got back from 2 wks in the sun my tank was full, some of them were huge. I tried everything to no avail. Then i got 2 pepps (2nd pic) and no change for about 2 weeks. Then one morning i got up and looked at the tank-the left hand side was void of aips. The next morning the right hand side was cleared and didn't see another all the time i had the shrimp. They ate the huge aips as well. Obviously i can only speak from my experiences but the shrimp were awsome. You need to get Lysmata wurdemanni (sp)- the 2nd pic, no others eat aips.

True peppermints are hard to get but I know a man that has some. :D
The problem is most shops sell other Lysmata.sp as peppermints - ie. Lysmata.calfornica (TMC) and pacific cousins the Lysmata.kuekenthali, The true peppermint is from the caribbean Lysmata wurdemanni (Your second picture);
If in doubt buy from us :D
Camel shrimps IMO have no place in a reef system (Your first picture).
