Hi,
I do not keep them.
Not enough knowledge, a little unsure regarding needs.
Think I will stick with my LPS & Softies.

I keep mainly SPS although I'm not convinced they're worth the hassle at the moment
Cheers

I only have a handful of SPS and struggle to keep them healthy. I think its because I have a lot of softies in my tank and the water is fairly nutrient rich. As I understand it SPS need very very clean water to thrive and right now I don't have the time and money to devote to them (ie buying kalk stirrers & calcium reactors etc).

The reason i ask this is because so many keep softies and sometimes put off keeping them! i would love to get more reefers keeping them and i think you can learn so much more when you move on to hard corals.:D
I don't keep them, and simply I find them boring. I just love seen a heavily stocked tank of softies waving around in the current. SPS seem quite lifeless in comparison.
However, thats what diversity is all about. We like different things.

SPS are just like bits of twigs off a tree and i find them boring, plus you need a shed load of tackle to keep them right also my m8 is forever cleaning calcium build up off his pumps etc. I keep only softies as i like to see movement in my tank, not a load of sticks stuck up. LOL Each to there own that is why we are all diferent. Eric

It's mantaining stability I suppose. The oulet on my Ca reactor clogged slightly a few weeks back, the outlet slowed, and the Ca rose to over 500ppm. At the same time, one of my streams moved, blew too hard on a pavona, which sloghed off some tissue, which developed brown jelly, which flew round the tank, and caused stripping on a load of other corals.
It's because I've been getting lazy, and neglecting the water testing and maintenance or I would've spotted the problems earlier.
Now I have a problem with some of the corals browning out, is it because the No3 went to over 5ppm or have I got too many other nutrients in the water?
I also need more flow which is more expense, with a softie tank none of the above would've happened.
The main problem is that they take a long time to grow and colour up properly, then one small mishap, or a slip with the tongs :o , and there's months of work down the pan.
Oh, and the expense. I'm running 900W over my 5' tank. Not to mention the Co2, ARM media, constant rowaphos, carbon etc.
Please ignore my moaning, I'm feeling a bit "kicked in the spuds" at the moment with the problems I've been having, I'll get over it :)
I love them to bits really :D
Cheers
Chris :)

Hi
I probably keep around 60% of sps in my reef.
I do agree that there is not much movement from them (unless you break them) but i find the colouration from them fantastic!:)
I also like a lot of you love the movement of softies and that is why i keep them as well.
I do agree that sps are very challenging to keep but that is what i like and also the fact that i keep mine with softies and lps which is an even bigger challenge.
sps can be a nightmare at times and it seems very little can send them bleaching but as said stability is the key which is what we all should be aiming for wether we keep sps or fish only.
Each to their own i suppose;)
Cheers

if your tanks is under 24" you can use t5 lighting just use good tubes:D lots of people i know grow good sps corals growning under t5's but all have calcium reactors on there tanks, keeping calcium levels and kh levels stable is the key to it. Add lots of water movement and your on to a winner just remember STABLE :D
