OK, I know certain types of clowns cannot be put together in the same tank, but have any of you had experience with actually having say a percula pair and a black and white pair together ??? Just an example mind, don't shot me down :-D

I think you may find that b&w clowns are a colour varient of percula or, possibly, ocellaris. Being fairly similar I think the general consensus is 1 pair per tank unless your tank is very very large.
I have, however, heard of someone with a pair of ocellaris and a pair of pink skunks in the same tank as both species are fairly benign, although again I think the tank was fairly large, ie 6ft plus.
Just to add, Clarkii's and Tomatos are renowned for their viciousness and will not tolerate any other clown fish in the same tank.
Personally, I would say its not worth the risk. But what the hey, I have 3 blennies and that is usually considered a no-no too.

It can and does work in large tanks.
I have a pair of toms and a pair of b&w saddlebacks in my 8'er. They each host in there own nems at either end of the tank, so are kept apart this way. Both pairs seem happy and the toms are regular spawners, so must be chuffed.
It isnt really a species thing on compatability, although some types are more aggressive than others so makes it harder. The problem is clownfish wont coexist with another of the same sex. 2 males will fight and pull rank untill 1 turns to female, 2 females will fight generally untill one dies!
So this is the risk not what types of clowns can be mixed. clowns will even pair with clowns of a different type so they aint really bothered about species.
If you are consider this though, make sure the tank is big enough, and a host either end helps alot. If you choose nems, make sure the pairs you choose host different types of nems- or else this is just something else to fight over. My Toms would travel the full lenght of my 8' tank when i had a bubble tip nem at each end. I thought my saddles would use one. They didnt so i moved both my bubbles to one side and know my toms never travel more than 2.5' away from there host and the saddles are the same with there blue carpet nem at the other end of the tank.

Hi
I agree with Mark.
I have 2 tomatoes, a maroon and an ocellaris that takes no crap off any of the tomatoes all in the same tank.
As Mark rightly pointed out you do need a big tank for this.

Hi I have 2 Black/white clowns and 2 Pink skunks in my7 footer and they are no bother, i think it would be a different matter with Maroons or Tomatoes as the are very nasty especially when they have eggs. HTH. Eric :)

hi,i have a pair of black percs, a pair of red sea clowns and a single fire clown.the pair of red sea clowns never venture very far from the two heteractis anemones which are next to each other.the fire clown goes between my two red bubble anemones and the black percs swim all over the tank but will not go into any of the anemones,i find this happens to most of these captive bred clowns except maroons and clarki clowns.all the clowns get on well together with no fighting.the only clowns i have had problems with have been with a pair of wild caught maroons, the female was over 5ins long and would attack any fish which came near the bubble tip anemone. this only happened when eggs were laid next to the anemone,in the end i had to rehome the pair because of this aggression.derek
