View Full Version : bio balls
took my bio balls out of my sump they were realy dirty so i think i will leave them out they just seem to colect dirt:eek:
Some would say they are better off out, and term them a "Nitrate Factory".
My last system never experinced a Nitrate problem whilst running with a shed load of bioballs. However, I think stocking levels, amount of liverock, water movement / maintenance regime all played a part.

i thought it was the old wet/dry filters where they became a nitrate farm, but im probably wrong.
i clean my bio balls in the sump water, that way the pods/worms and whatever i cant see survives and the detirus get broken down in the system

been getting high no3 i thought it were because of the bio balls i were right they have dropped from 20 to 10 in a couple of days so if i do a water change things should be ok:). i have also put 2 small fish nets under the pipes to the sump so it will stop any food from the top tank going to the sump

Hi I have a large fish / softy tank and run a large trickle tower 18x18x 24 high which is fed by a rotary spray bar from my A/M 5000 Baby skimmer. The water is cleaned before it goes into the trickle tower which is the way to do it as it only has clean water and no gunge going through it so never gets clogged and i have cleaned it in 2 years.
