just wondered if anybody could give me some advice? the 2 clowns i have seem a bit unwell ... the small one has a small white lump on the edge of one of its gills and its been flicking and rubbing up against the glass. the big one has been flicking too but has no marks on it but they have both been up at the top of the tank quite a lot as if trying to get air but there both still eating. cheers:)
Dan.

dan any pics, are they eating? are other fish doing the same - itching? Look close are they any small white/grey pin *****s on the clowns skin?
Is there a sheen, waxing or dusting on the clowns skin?
Please give more details or pics can really help.

the spot may be a fluke really need a pic. The fish at the top is a sign of breathing difficulty due to low oxygen or inflamed gills. Eating is a good sign although a pic may show something you are missing.

in meantime read up in gill parasites, gill flukes and general protozoan infections. Do a google image search and you may find something similar.

Hi all,
So for the delay, I was out last night and have just read this.
As James has said a pic would be great. Do you have a magnifying glass? If no nip down to WH SMith and get one, there are only about £8 or so.
This will help no end when inspecting your fish for sign of disease.
As well as flukes I am think it could be some kind of parasitic copepod/isopod, this is where the magnifier would be of huge benefit as you may be able to make out what exactly the spot is.
Don't think them being at the surface is anythign to worry about, my Common Clown does this all the time, he even sleeps at the surface and I have heard of a great many other Clowns, individuals from different species, doing the same.
Clowns are a PITA to photograph but do your best and we'll take it from there.

if they have flukes sometimes they swim about with one of their gills shut and flick constantly off the rocks,a fresh water dip can get rid of these but this would need to be done again in about 10 days case any eggs hatch and reinfect.its a good sign they are feeding.derek
