OK M8,
If your happy feeding it as above, then ask Macca to get you one, I am sure he wont mind selling starfish to feed it also. ;)

Hi,
I think what John is trying to say, is "its not really the right thing to do"
Our hobby is not about feeding live food - its just not cricket is it?
Although it happens in the wild, do you really think you should do it?
The choice is yours, but not the best idea in the world IMO
I was trying to infer that in my last post, but I guess it was a little subltle.

Its not about apples is it ?
At the end of the day, its your tank and your choice, and every one is entitled to thier choice.
All I was trying to do was show the flip side to the coin.

In theory yes but its human nature to domesticate wild animals some purely for our own plessure, I personally have nothing against other people buying animals like this and feeding them what they need, if they are willing to put the time any effort (and money) into ensuring that the said animals can live as they would (or as near to as possible)in the wild for aslong as they naturally live. Its not something I could do myself who know what will happen in 5 years time I may not be able to get live food for these animal (you never know) and therefore these animals would die due to my "neglect"
MarineMike this post was not directed at you (although I did use your post) I just thought I would explain what I ment by "IMHO":D:D

Hi Mike the thing is with Harlequin Shrimps is once they have eaten all your pest star fish they will perish, unless you have a constant supply of Asterina's from others tanks.HTH Twiggy
I dont see the difference between feeding them pest star fish, and feeding them flake.
fish meal is probably the worst thing for the environment our hobby has.
just asbove tho make sure you will have anoth to keep it going as on then videos they do look big!!!!

Hi Chris i dont understand what you mean as they only eat starfish and if they dont have them they will die, they will not eat flake or any other food what so ever. HTH Twiggy:D:D
what i meant is why the moral high ground on feeding starfish when in fact other foods that are seen as respectable are more damaging for the environment.

Hi,
Your right they do eat asternia's but what happens when they are gone, you then have to purchase starfish, LFS dont sell asterina's, however these shrimps also eat normal starfish (the nice ones you buy), so what you going to do, purchase one live for the shrimp to feed on?
The choice is yours, for me it just crosses the line.

Hi Chris there is other ways, when i had my 7footer i had thousands of them and i used to pick them out with tweezers and leave them to dry out . Then one day i was talking to a friend of mine who said that they do no harm, and the best thing was to leave them which i did and they all went. HTH Twiggy:D:D

hi , i have these stars in plague proportions there are 500 plus on my front glass in the morning , i considered a harly shrimp just not sure if they would eat faster than than the stars multiply , judging by the video they like big dinners! , We feed live brine shrimp ,rotifers to fry , etc how big does the prey have to be for it to be moraly wrong?
If there are enough reefers in an area maybe the shrimp could be passed round, just a thought

Hi that would be a good idea passing it around to those that have Asterinas, that way everyone gets rid of the pests and the Shrimp gets fed. Twiggy:D:D
