Here Here! We pay enough for the salt why we have to introduce supplements is beyond me. I know Calcium etc is depleted in a thriving system but I have seen myself supplementing a fresh mix :?

same here, dont fix it if it aint broke! i use to be a fussy git when it came to chemicals, some times you can get in over your head. i only do a go water change and i have kept hards and softs no probs good water quality is the key and good lighting... i think lol :? :-D like james says why pay all the money for the salt then add all the chemicals back to it

Not quite agreeing with you on this one guys!
I have to regulary add calcium via a calcium reactor and kalk stirrer.
I also have to add magnesium due to having 2 refugums.
I have a 300g system and loads of thriving sps which depleate calcium at a rapid rate so this is why i have to add it.
It would cost me a fortune in trying to replace this with water changes and i would imagine i would have to do quite a few weekly!
I also add sodium bicarbonate to keep my DKH levels at the required levels.
One thing i would say is never add anything to your tank that you are unable to test for

I add nothing but a good quality salt when i do a water change, as i only keep softies thats no problem but as FJ says when you have a load of SPS you have to have a calcium reactor to keep up with demand. Oh and plenty of food for my hungry Tangs. Eric :)

i dont think i will need to add anything yet as i dont need to i might do it in the future as my reef increases in demanding corals
water changes are all I do. I add nowt to my mainly softie with a few sps system. Thats enough for this type of setup imo.
Although I have seen others on other boards that promote additives, and also stipulate that your reef tank is not a sucess until 15 year old and this can be verified by a photo (lol) before you can post. lol.;)

I just use an oversized calcium reactor to put good stuff in and a Rowa reactor to take bad stuff out.
And regular weekly 25 gall water changes
