View Full Version : My Aquamedic Chromis Cube
In Oct 05, after months of pondering, I stripped down my old system, and with a little help from a good mate, Eric, I set up my small Aquamedic cube. Some 30+ gallons, I was initially worried about stability because of the size, but these worries have proved unfounded.
With live rock and mature water from the old system, all live stock went went straight in, and from day 1 flourished.
I am not great chemist, and being lazy I now rarely test the water parameters, but I do know when I see a very healthy soft coral.
The livestock comprises over a dozen softies and 3 lps. The usual clean up crew - snails, red legs and a cleaner shrimp. 1 Deresa Clam.
Fish wise, I have 4 very healthy inhabitants - 1 small(ish) yellow tang, 1 bicolour angel and a pair of maroon clowns.
All of the livestock has been with me for over 2 years, having been in my last aquarium.
I use no additives, and just do a five gallon water change every 2 weeks (sometimes I forget).
The tank is bare bottom, and with the addition of a Tunze Stream 6060 the bottom is spotless. I attribute the sucess of this system largeley to water movement, which is kep fresh by the contstant contact with the liverock.
The corals have grown rapidly, with hardly any live rock left visible. The rock work is built in a central pillar, and fish can swim all the way round.

Hi Kev. Tank looks good m8, you will soon be able to do some frag swops soon at the rate they are growing. Regards Eric
Cheers for the comments. Will hopefully get some more pics up this weekend. Eric, you may well be right about the frags.

excellent. love the colours of those softies. have you changed the bulb to another kelvin type or is it the one that comes as standard with the chromis?
TerraC
Cheers. Its just the standard bulb. Which reminds me, its about a year old and could do with renewing.

tank looks smashing mate. just 1 thing i realy advise u to remove the tang. they need 75 gal minimum.. and a small cube is very small. i worry about having one in my 90 gal
Hi liquidlogic
The Tang is fine. This is quite a small specimin, and Yellows are slow growing. The Yellow is one of the Tangs, in my opinion, that I can get away with in this system. This fish has been with me 2 years, taken from a previous system 1 year ago. He is displaying no behaviour different from housed in my former 100 gallon tank. He feeds very well, and has never had a touch of spot or other ailment / stresses. In very good health and always inquisitive.
I do heed your comments though, in general, Tangs are for larger systems. When he gets too big, or if there is any adverse problems, he will be rehoused with a friend.
Thanks for your comments, feedback always welcome.

looks great
Oakwell, thanks for the comments. It is small compared with some, but small comes with many advantages, being much cheaper to stock with a full tank of living coral.

Hi Kev. The tank looks good m8 that coral looks good as well, its amazing how a coral will grow in one tank and not another.:) Eric
Hi Eric
"That" coral is a stunner, and has done really well in there. The only things that are not growing fast are the LPS, although they are growing and healthy. I could start adding calc etc, but being a lazy reefer, this is not an option.
My motto is keep it simple, if its difficult I won't do it.

Hi Kev
I think i will go without the sump for now, as they say keep it simple stupid (kiss) so thats what i intend to do. Bob
keep it simple, I like that.
Check the options Bob, thats all I would say.

evening kev, you will have to excuse my ignorance trying to find my way round site, not very good at present!! the tank is cool. just setting up nano reef myself complete beginner, inspiration to me.:)
No worries, and welcome to the forum Frankie.
Thanks for your comments mate.
Just ordered a small 24 gallon nano myself yesterday, not getting rid of the Chromis, just thought I would have another setup, which I think will concentrate on LPS.
Again, thanks for your comments, and get posting.:)
Will be good to see some shots of your nano when up and running!
There are some pretty good nano owners on this forum too.

Hi Kev i have one word to say to you. SCISSORS, :D Eric
LOL. I waited for that one. Eric, if your saw this little 30 gallon tank now, you would understand why I would not entertain getting scissors in there at the moment. The corals have just grown so close together it looks so natural imo.
Scissors - NO:D

Hi Kev,
It just gets better and better. :)
How is the Nano project?
ATB
Cheers Ian.
The nano is still empty. Decided to go back to Skye next week for some scrambling / hill walking, on me tod.
So the nano will have to wait a few more weeks.
No rush though.
The Chromis is getting better, the corals are now on top of one another, and it looks good. Still not at the point where I will start fragging them though.
Doing a 5 gallon water change today, the first for a few months.
