According to peeps who have tried - yes! We have thousands of inverts that authors have not written about (does not mean they cannot be used in aquaria) so we need to determine ourselves hence the trial!

Cut and paste job from the "darkside" , may help?

species to the genus Heteropenaeus longimanus

In my reference book it says up to 8.5 cm comes from Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Japen, Australia and Palau. Males have an extraordinary long first pereiopod (clawed leg) for example a male specimen with a carapace of 17.5mm the pereiopod is 66mm. Sold by Kg in Philippine fish markets.

Googling and translating the german sites. They are saying that this species eats bryopsis. Hopefully it's the species of bryopsis that we normal get in our tanks.

Shrimps in stock - I would recommend only 1 per tank until we know more about their life habits.

ATM £5 Delivery is for drystock ( buckets of salt etc) they cannont guarantee a next day delivery on livestock so our normal charge of £12.50 for national delivery on livestock implies. To send 1 shrimp would be very expensive.

Day one in the shrimp brother house!
1:15 pm Heteropenaeus longimanus is buried in the sand bed.

9:30 pm Shrimp brother turns off the main lights leaving the artic lighting on H L emerges from the sand bed to be met by Strawberry Gramma HL shows the ability to shoot backwards a foot in one movement several times bouncing off the T5’s .

10:30 pm Shrimp brother turns off the Artic lights Strawberry Gramma heads to bed , HL settles down and tucks into a supper of Bryopsis algae.

To sum up so far this shrimp seems to be nocturnal burying itself into the sand bed during the day .
It shoots off backwards at very high speed up to a foot at a time when startled, this is where it gets it reputation for carpet jumping I presume!
The good news is this shrimp has a serious appetite for bryopsis

Macca
12-07-2007, 08:30 AM
To follow on; I have also noticed the tendency to bury themselves, they seem to be very easily scared - so no sudden movements or the can seriously dart in all directions (even out of the tank) dont seem to bother any other inverts including other shrimps.

Have a serious appetite for bryopsis :D but less so on derbesia  although they have been taken it down slowly.

Putting these shrimps in your system to control unwanted algae - bryopsis certainly has its pros but due to their tendency to dart when disturbed this is the key decision IMO if one should be purchased.

Its great to hear first hand how these shrimps are doing. I am sitting poised by my door waiting for mine to arrive.
I have a bryopsis problem in 2 tanks and am treating one with a raise in mag, the other will have the shrimp. It will be interesting to see the differences between the 2 tanks over time. (assuming shrimp does not jump)

12-07-2007, 10:17 AM
hmmmmm iam liking the serious appetite for bryopsis bit:D so caution is in order when approaching the tank as for the burying themselves in the sand bed iam scuppered as i have none:eek:

Nice to see I am quoted in other places :D

IIRC there is only one species to the genus, so I think the full name is ok.

Translating the german forums, they did say they were nocturnal and would eat other algae when the bryopsis is gone.

Nice to hear that they are doing their job.

Macca
12-09-2007, 08:11 PM
If you can keep them in the tank that is. :D

They can jump like no other invert I have seen :D
