Hi, I don't think they can.

I think you need to fit a T piece with a valve above the pump with one exit leading from the T leading back to the sump. Set it up so that fully closed all the water goes to the tank, I think that's the right way and gradually open the valve to get the correct flow.

This way you can regulate flow without putting back pressure on the pump.

How big is the tank? that seems like a big pump for a sump return. You could control it down with a control valve as has been said but in the long run it would be better to downsize the pump. An OR3500, or Eheim 1260 or 1262 would be more suitable. They burn much less electricity that the 6500 aswell.

It's a 6ft tank we were told that was the pump we needed we are going to see if the valve idea works if not he will have to get a smaller pump

Thanks all :)

Hi Caroline a 6500 should be ok for a 6ft tank, what size tank connecters have you in the tank as water will only go out slowly through a say 32 mm pipe work. For the 6500 you need at least 50mm pipe which means you want a 63mm hole in the tank/How many outlets are there from the tank as if you have 2 50mm pipe a 6500 is ok and should not want throttleing back. The thing is to get a balance between the tank and the sump making sure that if the power goes off the sump will hold the excess water in it, also if the overflow blocks your tank wont overflow with the water whats in the sump HTH Twiggy:D:D

Hi,

Maybe this'll help.

http://www.reefcentral.com/calc/drain.php

Just convert litres to US gallons by dividing by 3.78 and enter the result in the webpage
