My new tank is ready to have the live rock added. Can anyone recommend anywhere to buy it from. I've been into Marine Tech to see Ian. I need between 15-20 kilo's...they do a package for £180 for 20kilo's.

Hi,
There are various outlets that sell live rock on line, you could do a search there.
However, the price you have been quoted is a good price.
The choice is yours.

I don't think so, not on live rock as you are getting discount on the £10.00 per kg normal price anyway. But as stated both on here and in store you are able to pick and choose.:)

I think your better off going to a retailer and picking your own. You can pick all the shapes and sizes you want. I wouldn't trust buying them over the internet, you don't know what you would end up with!

we ordered 100kg of rock off line because it was only £4.45kg thats cheap even for us! and we are a shop.
was told it was fiji with lots of life even when they phoned me they said it was the best around BUT and there is always a BUT it turned up AND it was african rock and was rubbish:mad: so i would by from a shop any day even if it cost a bit more:D

We have enough in at the moment yes. We are expecting another shipment in shortly but that will have to cure first.

Hi. I have always bought rock that i can see and chose which pieces i want, rather than someone else pick it for me and get a load of small or to large pieces of rock. HTH.Eric

other options are as my mates and i did, ppl who selling up breaking down their tanks, fully matured covered in coraline, teaming with life and and at half any shop price (going rate about £5 kg)
places to search are local loot (loot.com) even fleabay you can see local enough tank sell ups, other classified forum listings etc.
your expensive hobby is just starting dont cut corners but save where you can cause you not gonna have any money once you get going;)

hi...i agree with berns here, (not trying to do a sponsor out of a sale) but it is your hard earned cash here.
why not buy half from marine tech(your system is going to be stocked slowly over the next few months?) then you have the option of either buying that bit of rock from marine tech that looks so right in the future or mopping up a bargin when someone splits the tank.

Just a point on buying live rock second hand while you can enjoy the benefits of well mature good looking and cheap rock you can also inherit other people’s problems. The obvious issue is copper but also IMO if the tank has high nitrates and/or phosphates the live rock can act as sponge and dump the problem on to your tank. Not trying to condemn the idea I bought 47kgs for £200 myself which completed my cycle in less than 24hrs so it can be worth while but try to get the parameters of the tank before you agree to buy and if possible have a look at the tank before the shut down starts if it looks dirty and not very well maintained say no thanks.
If you are getting some rock from a shop and can choose try to get nice porous rock it’s much better as a filter and won’t cost as much to fill your tank.

the same applies to shop rock as far as getting baddies like aiptasia you only gotta look in shop tanks to see its potentially everywhere (thats not to say lots shops have aip free rock cause they do)
but a quick close inspection of any second hand rock will show, bottom line my suggestion was to do wat probably half the new tank set ups do nowadays as this is one way to achieve a mature set up teaming with life, if you run a poll on "wat would you rather buy" you'll find the majority would search hard to find second hand rock for the 2 main reasons, cheaper and maturity factor.
basically second hand rock is snapped up where ever its advertised as far as worrying about bad rock just take someone with you who seen plenty rock in their experience:D

Like I said Berns I’m not trying to rubbish the idea of buying second hand rock after all I did it myself. I am however just trying to point the potential problems I’d hate to think someone bought some rock, following our advice, to set up a full blown reef from a tank where copper had been used.
Cheers

i didnt think you really were mathew as you did mention in there you buy second hand yourself (and wat a saving you made yourself)
but if i was a complete newbie asking same question your post would of deffinatly put me off buying second hand rock lol
so my reply was just to enlighten the poster to how most of us think, the other side of the coin so to speak:)
having a bigger picture, more input from ppl helps everyone making those expensive decisions decide how they wanna do it:)

I also agree. if you are on a tight budget and are just setting up, with all the other costs taken into account you can save a lot of money by buying rock from people whom are down sizing or giving up the hobby totally. You also have the option if they live close enough to view and cherry pick the best rock too. It's the way I did it when I first set up.
Some good info here.
I must admit, I would buy from a reputable LFS any time. A few year back I ordered a box which did not turn up for a week. It was a stinking heaving mess when I opened up the box, however, that was just my sole experience which has put me off. I am sure there are plenty good outlets.
