i am having a BIG problem keeping leather corals i bought one a week ago and this morning i noticed it started to rot away like the last one i have tanke it our of the tank it has basically split into afew pieces and looks like its rotting from inside.
I have monitored it now for the week and not seen anything eating at it (even at night) but at a total loss!
All other corals seem ok but just at a loss now what to do i have put a small piece of it back in after i split it from the main damaged one but am gutted luckily it is only a frag and not lost much in terms of money but cant get my head around why?
hope someone can help!

Not sure what the peramiters are suposed to be to keep leathers but mine love to be in direct flow and quite high up in the tank but i only have 150w halides:D HTH

Signs of any snails in and around it Daz?
Does it have any sort of hole in the middle, or anything unusual in the middle of the top part?

sometimes large bristleworms and crabs can damage them, just needs some small bits of damage and they can start to decay.if all the peramiters are ok must be some kind of bacterial infection.derek

yeah at a loss! infact gutted cos the leather is one of my favourite corals but never seen to be able to maintain one
Funny things Leathers. I have one that was donated. Did not do well in another system, despite being a good setup. It came to me 18 months ago looking sorry, and has grown like a goodun since I popped it in my tank.

starting on some thoeries of my own, because my leather doesn't polyp up. i think it may be down to kh and ca and am going to start the balling method soon to try and remedy my way too low readings. may be worth a try doing some kh and ca tests???

I've heard this about leathers, in some tanks they thrive others then don't really grow and in a few they die. It seems this can be the case for quite a few softies, xenia is very similar. Very strange.
