The biggest problem I have found with xenia is temp and ph. I have read somewhere they also require iodine additions. I used to keep the same species in fast flow - as you are told to do, and they never pumped as much as Steve C (on this forum - Coral Cultivations) tank who kept his only at a reasonable flow.
Give Steve C a PM his colony's always thrived in his tanks.

PS are you feeding the xenia phyto in purpose

Yep, Lower current levels are the way to go. Also, if you have them lower down the tank, try moving them up a bit, they seem to like a bit more light.

there is over 1000 watts of light over tank the trouble is if i slow the flow down the rest of the tank will suffer:( the tank is 8foot by 4 foot wide and xenia is evey where:confused:

The xenia in my nano is thriving and pulsing quite happily in moderate to fast flow. I don't think the problem is necessarily flow related. It would appear that xenia are rather partial to nitrates. I've heard of a few folk in the US actually using xenia as nutrient export in place of macro algae. Indeed, since I added a tiny frag of xenia to my nano, the nitrates have reduced to barely detectable and the chaeto hardly grows at all anymore. The xenia is multiplying at a fearsome rate and I've been giving away frags. Am actually considering adding some frags to my main system sump to see if it helps with the nitrate problem I have in that tank.
Just a thought

I've also read that they like very good oxygen rich water so a high ORP helps along with a good surface to air ratio in your tank. I just cant seem to grow the stuff in my tank but TBH the last time I tried i was having all sorts of trouble with PH and a bad salt mix. :(

There is at least one post that mentions pH or temp. These parameters intimately control or have an impact on, the oxygen levels/reductants in your system. I have observed that pulsing colonies tend to regress and die when kept less than optimally oxygenated water.
There are many factor that influence O2 levels. Read part I and the conclusion (in press) of O2 too low? to optimise your oxygen levels. This will get it pulsing again and thriving in your aquarium.
This may also be an early warning sign of problems that are about to occur so please take heed. If you have a patch of cyanobacteria you have not been able to get rid of then this too can be a sign of something sinister.

Im a newbie so you guys know more than me, but I have read that Xenia require Iodene to thrive as well as Nitrates
