I have just bought a 48inch x 18inch x 12 inch second hand tank out of the paper and was wondering how you work out how many litres it holds. I need to decide whether or not to have it as my display tank or use it for a sump. Any suggestions please.
Thanks Rich

2 options

1 use a free online converter or
2 convert inches to cm i.e. 1 inch = circa 2.5cm

Then multiply length x width x hieght

think thats right or have i missed something.

Found a link on a post its 169.9 L approx but thanks anyway lads. I currently have a 180 L vision so I'm not sure I want to down size, thinking maybe use it for the sump and hang out for a larger tank to come along.

Hi What you have to remember is a tank of 48x18x12 is an outside measurment so you have to deduct the 2 layers of glass thickness each way to get the true gallonage. IE if the glass is 10mm you have to take 20mm off the length breadth and height to get a true size, and also you never fill a tank right to the top edge so you can knock another 3 inch or so of the height.
