over the last 2/3 days ive notices that one of my yellow tangs has a few rips in ith dorsal fin as has the moorish idol and the yellow fin tang has a white lump in its dorsal fin,

these fish have always been freindly towards each other and they are swimming around with each other as i type this.

they all eat algea that is growing on the powerheads could there fins be getting suched up into the impellors (seio by the way) or could something else be attacking them like a large green brittle star

could there be another fish havin a go at them????

I have a seio pump and the intake looks too small to allow large fins into them????Although i wouldnt rule it out:D

i dont think it would be any other fish, i have;

2 yellow tangs
2 regal tangs
1 yellow fin tang
1 moorish idol
4 common cloun fish
2 green chromis
1 cherub angel
1 cleaner wrasse
1 juvenile emperor angel
1 royal gramma
1 blue stripe gobie (somewhere)
2 scooter blennies
1 tiny little orange and white thing that i cannot find an id for anywhere

all this is making me think that the brittle star has started getting a taste for fish.

Could it be a baddie crab having a swipe at them?

Is the brittle star green?

Is the brittle star green?

Yes:o i only found out that they ate fish after i put it in the tank.

the only other thing that has changed is that i disconnected the auto feeder (because i changed the stand) and they seem to be more "agressive" when i feed by hand.

I have know brittle stars to attack fish, especially the big green ones. They stand on all legs and wait for a fish to go under them, then they sort of try sitting and grabbing onto the fish.

Try putting some meaty food like a cockle in the sand to keep it happy.

Either that or swop it for a nicer starfish.

i feed it with Marine Halibut pellets that i use for fishing, it loves them it even takes the 24mm size ones:eek:

I notice you have 2 regal tangs. FWIW my regal tang is quite a bully and is the only fish in my tank that'll rip the fins of my other fish when in a bad mood. Could it be one of them?

possibly, they all seem real happy together they all swim in one big shoal but what happens on a night i dont know. I managed to catch the brittle star and moved him to the sump and im going to get the auto feeder back on asap as there may be more aggresion towards each other since theres less food going in:D

my idol occassionally gets a spilt in his fins due to dashing in and out of the rockwork, yours might just have caught it on a rock or from one of the other fish.they usually heal up within the week.derek

Hi John, I wonder do you have the room lights on for any length of time, perhaps a lamp or uplighter, after the tank lights go off?

Phil Hunt mentioned in a recent article in PFK that dawn and dusk are the most tense times for marine animals. He reckons a few minutes twilight is all that's needed to keep them happy before full dark. Too long a twilight period and the tensions may spill over into violence.
