Hi,
my Tomato clowns still dont seem to have paired up in my tank.
The male (smaller and most colourful of the 2) is hosting a large area of pulse xenia and the female (the larger, darker in colour of the 2) hands about in a LR cave...both are great feeders...taking era II flake and mysis.
at first teh female was scared of everything and would hide when approaching the tank...she does this less now and will actually coem out of cave when you approach...guess she thinks shes going to get fed!!
now and again the male will sort of shiver next to her and now and again she will charge at him!!
do you think they will pair up? i would have thought the female would have hosted the xenia and the male be the most timid...but no its the other way around!

were they bought as a "pair" if not there is no saying that you have a male and female pair. You could have two males at the moment!

yes bought as pair and you can see they are male and female by colouring and size!
maybe they arnt ready for a long term relationship yet and are just 'texting' each other!!! :D

How do you work that out mate, just because a clown is big, doent make it a female. I could be an older fish that has come from a different pair, and the colouring has nothing to do with it AFIK. But if they were bought as a pier then fair enough.
Were they acting like this in the LFS set up?

at the lfs were they acting as a pair swimming together.if they are a genuine pair just give them a bit time to see what happens, of all the pairs i have bought all have eventually got together given time.derek

ok so even if they are not a true pair (but still think they are)...with the way clowns are...one of them, i should think the bigger will turn into the female...am i right thinking this?

normally the dominant one will eventually change into a female and take control.derek

thinking about it...in the lfs (MTs) they were both more or less same colour...and Chris held them for a month for me whilst my tank cycled...within this month the one which i think is female grew and started to lose its 'brightness' in colour compared to the male...and since been in my tank the female has grown to be much larger than the male and also become darker in colour!!
so on this basis i would say they are male and female...just not properley paired up yet in my tank.
