Evening All....;)
I appear to be having a tad white spot problem on my Royal Gramma. Appears to be just on her tail area at the mo but obviously want to get this nipped in the bud asap.
I've been reading Garlic is extremely good at curing the problem however wondered what you guys thought? If garlic is the answer what the best way to dose?
All advise greatly appreciated :D.
Thanks;)

garlic is just a device to encourage feeding, as a full bellied fish is happy and more likley to get over the illness than a hungry one.
there is no scientific evidence of garlic curing w/s in marine fish, tests have been done on freshwater fish with mixed results, but marine w/s and freshwater w/s are 2 different things

Any chance of quarantineing the fish?
Rob.

Are you sure it's white spot and not just a few spots due to stress/bad water?
IMVHO I wouldn't add garlic to my fish food.

Hi Rob,
Tries to PM Zues but can't seem to find them? Have I got the correct name?
Thanks George:D
Hi George,
Before we jump on the Whitespot parasite, can you see any spots on the other fish?
Is you skimmer okay and not pumping micro bubbles into the tank?
Have you had any sandstorm accidents with powerheads or perhaps stirred up some sand either yourself of by one of the other fish or has the Royal Gramma been grubbinbg about the substrate?
It could be either bubbles or grains of sand stuck to the fish.
Are the fish, any of them, flicking or scratching/rubbing on rocks, pipes etc?
As Muzzy says garlic is normally used as an attractant but it has been also suggested that garlic could mask the pheromone signature of fish and the parasite then finds it difficult to locate hosts. Since the fish MAY already have the parasite attached that's not much help. However, it may protect the other fish and prevent further infection on the Royal Gramma.
However, this is pure conjecture but you can still try it.
Lastly, could you do me a favour and post your pH and alkalinity readings please?

I've cured white spot 3 times now and not lost any fish to it, all I use is frozen food soaked in Garlic extract and vitamin C constantly fed through out the day in small doses, The garlic induces the fish to feed and the vitamin C helps the fishes immune system the fish do all the rest.:D

ive never had a fish that needed persuading to eat
having said that ive tried the garlic method for w/s, it cleared up but was also using UV and ozone as well so no hard proof it was the garlic

as long as the fish is feeding i just let the fish cure itself.putting garlic in the food dose not cure whitespot but might encourage the fish to continue eating.using a quarentine tank can stress the fish and treating with copper can do the same thats why i never use these methods.derek
