HI all, i have a quick question, i got a mushroom on tuesday from a mate over in hull, i got it home and acclimatised properly over 2 hours and settled him in the tank. After an hour or so it looked a bit unhappy so i moved him under the shade a bit to let him recover but all its done is go downhill over last 3 days. Looked like it was shedding but then went droopy and collapsed ending up splitting away from stem. I tested the water params and slight nitrite spike was showing so i have now binned him and left tank to sort itself out over a water change or 2.

Question is? What happened to it, and why? Is there anything i could of done or was it a rotten apple on arrival?

Mushroom as in a sarcophyton sp?? which are usually called toadstools.

Hi mate, thanks for the come back, yes a sarcophton or definitely something of the sort, forgot to mention in last post my friend also got one and his is exactly the same although it hasnt fell apart. Yet.

His tank is only a few months old mine is more mature over a year now so was confused why they both did same thing? Also our water params are slightly different.

Did it appear to decay from the inside out.

Was it pretty much as soon as you put it in yur tank that it went downhill?

Did you have a good look at it when you got it out? any unusual worms or snails on it or in it?

HI, it looked to rot mostly outside in but looked poor in middle in spots.

Yes from the moment i put it in.

No nothing obvious although rock it came on had sponges and other small growths on it. Should i put this back in after a light scrub??

Hi,

2 hours to acclimatise ?, thats a long time for a coral IMO

Not sure if this anything to do with it?

Try it in a low flow area with moderate lighting, it may just surprise you.

He's binned it Ian.

Ovesk8, the rock should b fine to put back in.

I have no explanation for why it happend, they are prone to snails that can eat them from the inside.

2Hrs is alot to acclimate a coral like a toadstool, perhaps you should have left it in place a little longer to see what would have happend. Unless it was really really rotting, I can't see it giving a spike.

Did the coral look healthy in our shop, ie where the polyps out, we never sell them unless they are usually, I will replace them gladly as long as you bring me a water sample before you take another :):):)

yes they are usually no problem with them, they are quite hardy unless any parasites have invaded it. some take quite a while to settle in once moved but are usually ok in a few days.derek

May have been a little impatient then moorish as i left it 24 hours and it looked really bad and rotting so when the stem of the toadstool snapped and it just layed there rotting after i tested water to find small nitrite levels i thought best thing to do was get it out asap. I have since put the rock back in and seems ok although my medusa has closed up prob because of the water params changing slightly? Also the medusa seems to have developed a few small black marks on it here and there which come off when touched but leave like a new skin look underneath? Would these be some sort of infection or are they nothing to worry about?

As for colour it was a pinkish one with small polyps extended 70% when i got it but did have small blotches on the head (kind of yellow colour).

Chris (MT) This was a coral i bought from steve before popping in your shop, thanks for your kind comments but im pleased to say the piece of plating monti and other frag i got from your shop are happy and settling in fine although if you fancy giving me a toadstool ill not turn you down. lol:D

Didnt know you werent in tuesday so hopefully ill get time to pop over and have a chat in next few weeks.

Thanks for help so far people.

Possibly could be flatworms, I know Erics medusa is the coral that suffered most when they were at their heith in his tank?

Is it possible to get a pic to aid in the id?

Cheers chris!:D Dont worry ill be back to annoy you in a week or 2:) Good news about my medusa though mr tee, all the black spots had gone and it was fully out when i got home yesterday so no need for a diagnosis. Must have been water params out for a day or 2 due to the suicider:D

Thankyou all for your help, great forum and one ill be sticking with.
