Yellow Tail Blue Damsel

Hi All,

Id like to have a bit of blue in my tank...i.e. a blue fish!!...which isnt big!

im thinking about maybe a yellow tail blue damsel...now i understand damsels can be aggressive...is this true of this breed and will it get on with my 2 new tomato clowns?

im thinking of having 4-5 fish max in my nano.

i have 2 toms and have been thinkng about one day having a purple firefish.
would a yellow tail damsel be ok with these fish and also with corals and inverts?

I have two of these in my tank.

I added 3 originally but one of them was quite weak when it arrived - and it was battered by the other 2.

They can be a little aggressive towards new tank mates of a similar size. They picked on my blue green chromis when i first added them.

Other than this they are generally not too aggressive - supposed to be one of the least aggressive damsel fishes

the yellow tail blue damsel is a darker, brighter blue from what i've seen...the chromis are nice just not 'blue' enough!!;) :D

actually maybe i was mistaken about how blue chromis are...did a google image search for a blue chromis and came across this...please see picture...if this is a type of blue chromis then i may be persuaded to get one of these guys...

these fish i saw whilst diving in Antigua last week...

they are very nice :D

Hi I would keep away from Damsels as they are not for small tanks IMO as they are very agressive. You say you want 4 or 5 fish in your nano. which to me is pushing it as in a well established normal size tank ie 100 gallons the rated stocking rate is 1 inch of fish per 4 gallons of water. You have 20 uk galls which will give you at the max 5 inch of fish, and when your Tomato clowns grow they will reach that themselves.HTH :D Eric

That is a blue chromis in your pic. But I gotta agree with Eric, the tomato clowns will grow quite big, at least the female will. They are also part of the damsel family and are pretty aggressive fish themselves. So adding more damsels could be a disaster. A firefish too could be the target of attack as they are very docile fish.

On the other hand, if you want more fish then I don't see a problem with adding a couple of small gobies, ie neon, clown or small shrimp goby. They won't get in the way of the clowns too much and are fast enough to get out of the way if they do.

In any event, it would be worth waiting a while before adding any other fish. My clowns were established for over a year before I added another fish to their 11g tank, and that was a neon goby. This allows time for the water conditions to completely stabilise, which is of vital importance with such a small volume of water.

I have to aggree Damsels are aggresive I have a yellow tail blue and it's a bully it has even had a go at my ceaner shrimp only my clowns put it in it's place,

i would stay clear of the damsels,they are to aggessive chromis would be better but be careful not to overstock as your tank is very small.derek
