I am making my own sump and have seen this sump and like the idea of the baffles.

But why all the pipes, surly you just go in and out again?

Hi Pat,
At a guess, the second pic of sump is feeding a closed loop (at a guess).
As you say, in one end, over a couple of baffles, back out is a simple sump.
The sump is a major part of a marine set up, so ask your self what do you wish to do with it. DSB (Deep sand bed), Algea scubbing, rubble zone, ect.
As you are setting up from scatch, its worth spending the time to look at how you are going to deal with nutriant export.

Cheers for the PM Pat, I'll put the reply here so everyone can see.
I am currently going through the same thoughts as you, as I'm thinking of redoing my sump too.
For details on sumps, different types different lay outs etc - http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html
Excellent place to start.
Next thing is to decide is what to put in the sections. As Ian says there are many different things and methods to do. Deep sand beds are a good place to start. Be warned though there are lots of different takes on the basic set up.
Good reference here - http://www.ronshimek.com/Deep%20Sand%20Beds.htm
If you want to know more - type DSB Depth into a any forum search thread and head for the long ones.... Good ones on reefcentral, and more on the marine depot forum under Anthony Calfo.
If you still want more, go to Reef Ranch and talk to Chris to get another perspective. He now has a little tank (4 footer) set up, and I am sure he will be happy to talk you rounfd how the sump is set up.
Miracle mud systems are not things I have been exposed to, but are similar in operation to DSB.
Algae scrubbers are something I am looking into at the moment, new ground for me and finding references on the net is a bit tough.
As for the 2 you have already found, don't worry about all the pipes. In the simplest form a sump has 2, one in and one out. Everything else is put in there to keep it out the main tank. As Ian says it may be a closed loop ( Certainly looks like it from the pump) or it may be feeds to reactors other sumps etc.
Have a look at the links above and post back if you need any more, or require clarification on anything. Maybe have a go at sketching one out and post it up for comment. 30 eyes are definately better at spotting shrtfalls than just 1, and it is quitte easy to make daft mistakes.
