Hi All,

Will a pair of Clarki clowns or an individual be ok in a D&D Nano 24?

They are my fav clowns and im hoping to keep at least one if not a pair.

Thanks.

Hi Rich,

A little small for a Carki IMO, also these fish can be very aggressive IIRC.

I think they should be ok if you buy them small, would definitely get a pair though. They are potentially one of the largest clown species, and also one of the most aggressive. Probably best not to add any other fish. Be prepared to move them on or upgrade if they begin to outgrow the tank though.

I have a pair of Tomato clowns in my nanocube which are potentially of a similar size to the Clarkii's. They spent 2 years in a 12g tank before I upgraded specifically to accommodate them.

lol - you beat me to it Ian :D

Still think they'd be ok for a wee while until they grow but you have to have an exit strategy prepared in advance imo.

Yes i will buy as a young pair if i decide to get them.

should the clarkis be the last fish i add to my setup...as im thinking of maybe having a goby and shrimp combo and maybe a royal grammar.

Thanks.

gotta agree. the pair of clark's I had were nasty but then again they were fully grown 5" long and breeding. I had them in a 4ft tank of their own. If you get a pair be prepared to house them as the only fish in that tank and you'll need to rehome them when they get big.

gorgeous fish though..

Thats my plan...get them young...grow them on and then upgrade :D

If i get fish such as a goby which will spend most of its time around bottom of tank in and around LR...then the Clarkis wont be interested as much or if they are then the LR will be shelter as the Calrkis wont fit in the same little hole in LR as a goby would!!;)

If you want to add other fish to your setup, especially those the size of shrimp gobies and gramma's, then I would say definitely no to the Clarkii's. They will harrass the other fish, possibly to death. This advice would also go for Tomato's and Maroon's as well. A much safer bet would be a pair of Percs or Ocellaris. Sorry.

You have to be very careful you don't overstock these tanks. Its very easy to do with the 24g nanocubes as you have to bear in mind that the 24g referred to are US gallons. In imperial gallons the tanks are around 20g. With displacement and the fact that a section of the tank is used for the sump and you'll be lucky to have 16g of actual water volume.

I still hold by my first comments though, get them small enough and don't add any other fish and it should be fine.

You have to think about the stress on the goby if it gets picked on, it may refuse to come out and feed - goodbye fish :(

My Tomato's roam the entire tank. I do have two tiny gobies in my tank and if they get in the way of the clowns then they are chased all over the place. Shrimp gobies are very timid fish at the best of times and if its harrassed every time it comes out then very soon its not going to come out at all. JMO though, every fish is an individual but you have to be very careful when mixing fish in a small space. Compatibility is a bigger issue when there's no where to hide.

something like a nice pair of black and white percs would be a safer alternative.

Yeah i see your point guys.

may have to rethink on the clown front then...maybe a pair of B&W's

But thinking on the flip side...dont fish, if bought young and then they grow up together...dont they get familiar with their tank mates?

No necessarily and not ime. They are going to defend their territory no matter what other fish they grow up with especially if there are eggs involved. That's what they do ;)

provided you get a small pair and have nothing else in the tank and as already stated you would need to rehouse them when fully grown.derek

They grow to like 5inches.

I would say no to the Clarkis ...... just get a bigger tank at the outset.

Hi Rich whats all this about keeping large fish in small tanks, would you like to be taken out of your home and bunged in a cardboard box to live. I dont think so and i think you would soon get a bit pissed off and narky and start smacking the first person that came near you. I am not being funny just realistic and trying to think of the health and welfare of the fish. Eric:)

a small pair of percs might be better suited as they only grow to just over 2in and not as aggressive as clarki.derek
