Hello All
May need some help on this one. just got back from a 8 week trip away and all looked well at first glance with tank. Then the next day came down to devastation fish across the board started to drop. over the next 3 days lost the majority, i have had the close knit fish family for over 6 years and all where plump and healthy, never had a problem with anything apart from now, lost tang, emperor angel gobies, both clowns over 6 years old, and various small fish the only ones i have left are a lemon peal which hasnt been affected, 1 x chromis and 2 convicts. Corels are fine apart from a softie which is sulcking this was a new addition about 2 months ago, havent added any new livestock into the system for about a year before this toadstool ,bubbletips look ok
big cyno out break that appered overnight ummmmmmmmmmmmm. doing massive change to get things back on track check out the pics of my sorry looking clown before he passed.....

Hi Rob sorry to hear your bad news m8 i know you have had the fish for a long time and the last time i saw it it was a lovely system which all looked good. Its hard to say what it could be as the other fish are ok, do you have any algae thats gone assexual and bloomed the tank is the water milky looking if so it could be that. These things happen out of the blue and its a mystery what causes them, as there been any hair spray or air fresheners used near the tank as this can cause such problems. I hope you find the cause m8 as its heart breaking to lose fish you have had the time you have. Twiggy

your wife not spraying hairspray in the room? to suddenely loose all your fish is strange, must be high ammonia or oxygen depletion or poison chemicals, the Cyano is a different worry, I would be concerned about the fish loss first.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm The wife did install a plug in air freshner the other month it ran for 2 weeks before she told me about it over the phone and i told her to take it out as the tank is in a cellar. that could be it, she says it has been off for weeks though, could it be a delayed reaction. DRAT she is not in the good books, whats the best way to tackle the issue if it is the air freshner that could have done it. did you see the pics of the clowns does that look like it could be the dreaded air freshner ????????
Whats the next step?????????
Eric glad you are ok the water isnt cloudy the tank looks fine apart from the cyno.
thanks for the help

i had same issue, the missus had a glade plug in one next to my old system was there for a few weeks before i started loosing fish, couldnt understand it n the guys on here worked it out pretty fast. had a film of chemicals on the top that was from the air freshener and with the surface aggitation it was mixing into the water, causing poisoning. my PB Tang and regal tang had same colour and white markings as your clown has. its a learning curve, u could always build a new patio for the wife, lol.

Looks like it could be it, lost a few large fish without trace so my 8 year mature water is all over the place ammonia spike at the mo, stripping back this afternoon to find the dead ones if i can find any remains. How did you resolve the issue apart from getting shut of the plug in and binning the wife ?????
My lemon peal looks fit as a fiddle its all very strange................................. he must be one tough fish my gold rim tang was well fit good size eating well, its such a shame. suppose once i have sorted out the problem chance to restock over the coming year.
better get the CARBON READY .

ammonia spike will be from the dead fish, cuc will of no doubt devoured most of the remains but u may find some in the rock work. i had to do a large water change and then lots of water smaller changes for a few weeks after and moved remaining stock into a QT, took a few weeks but got there in the end. i lost my bi-coloured angel and flame angel as well. a good clean up n water changes will do the trick, also run carbon like u said to remove any other crap from the water.

Really gutted to hear of your crash, it sounds like toxins to me too, big water changes and carbon should help, also a polyfilter might not go amiss?
So easy to do a lot of dame with simple things like air freshners and sprays, hope the rest do ok.

Hi Rob i am fine m8 glad your tank seems to have settled down now, its a shame when anything like this happens my big tank i had did the same and i lost all but 1 of my big tangs that i had had for years like you. Just keep doing water changes and adding carbon or a polyfilter to absorb the toxins keep us informed how things go Twiggy

sorry to hear this but looks like the worst is over carbon will remove the toxins but a polyfilter will do it quicker from my experience.
Keep at it mate

Good to hear things are settling again bud. 10 out of 10 for sticking with it. These things happen to us all unfortunately but the best antedote is trying again! Stewart
