I originally used the standard Tropic Marin salt (not the Pro Reef), but changed to Reef Crystals for the higher calcium content when I started keeping corals and had great results with that. 8-)

I once had to buy a bucket of Aqua Medic salt when the Reef Crystals was out of stock and had salinity problems with that. My normal 2 cups of salt per 5gal bucket gave varied S.G. readings! I didn't notice this for a few weeks until I noticed that one bucket would be really high, the next would be really low! :(

i use seachem salt in our shop and have to say very pleased with it,its a good all rounder, but there are a lot of salts out there that are as good ive tried most of them some times u just have to go with what your lfs stocks because thats all thats avaliable to you :( if thats the case ask them to order you in some of what you decide to go with.

Hi,
I use red sea coral pro salt, and have discovered that a lot of local marine keepers inc. lfs have switched to it and swear by it.
Guess the only advice I can pass on is to test salt mix for phosphates etc, have heard some mixes can introduce such things
Hope this helps :)

Hi I have just started using Redsea pro reef salt and find it very good high in calcium even higher than reef crystals. Personally i dont think it matters with a FO system but when you have corals it make a difference. Eric :)

For me it has always been reef crystals.

We have used Seachem Reef for a couple of years throughout the shop now with no problems what-so-ever, but we have customers who swear by Instant Ocean and TM Pro Reef.
Regards Chris

You will get a mixed bag of replies with this one!

I have tried them all and have gone back to Instant Ocean.

I was using other salts that were supposed to have extra additions such as calcium and magnesium.

As i add these anyway i see no reason to pay extra.

I have found reefcrystals and TMC salts to be very good as well.

Cheers

It turns out that the Red Sea Coral Pro Salt has 480 ppm Ca at 35 PPT. It is produced by evporating salt from the Red Sea! All natural, but expensive! 7kg bucket ~£26.99

Seachem reef salt for me!

I have been using it for the past 6 months with no problems, plus at £44.50 a bucket it’s pretty cheap.

i have tried nearly all the salts commonly available, i use a calcium reactor so i am looking for a salt that is well balanced with a nsw level of magnesium 1350 or there abouts and i am afraid it`s like rocking horse ****, so now i just buy the cheapest and have a good supply of additives i have yet to find a salt that is even close to nsw levels it might be me, just unlucky cheers gary

As per Gary, I used the cheapest salt available at the time and add mag chloride/sulphate to ensure I have an NSW level of 1350ppm at 35ppt. I then check that Ca and Alk are in balance and add either or as necessary, then rely on kalk to bring up both in balance.

Have used TM pro reef without any problems, as of last week moving over to Seachem - will see how that goes over the next few weeks.

I've salted my system with Reef Crystals but I've just started to do water changes with Instant Ocean. I will be monitoring Dkh/Calcium/Mg levels to ensure my Calcium Reactor copes with the change.

I've changed simply due to cost. A 25kg tub of IO is £10 cheaper than RC. I do weekly 25 gallon water changes so the saving is worthwhile provided my levels remains OK

I started with Seachem but then moved onto the red sea pro. Its so good to mix some up and see all the parameters spot on, with no need for additives.

Hi I have also used this and find it good, the only let down is its only a 22kg bucket instead of 25 kg bucket with others. Eric
