hi guys,

i am starting a wish list for my nano(90ltr). I know i cant add everything at once but want to get an idea of what i can and cant keep. I have heard that 6 line wrasse are good? I also would also like a small goby. My Mrs loves clowns and i must admit i am a fan, however i have read many articles about clowns dying from diseases?? I want to have a good variation of softies to make it visually appealing. I have seen Kenya tree frags (?!) they seem quite cheap and have read that they are quite hardy? Can i have cleaner shrip in with my hermits? I would also like an anenome but have heard they can be a pain? I have already found a buyer for the tang. He will go on Monday so it will be easier to do some aquascaping after he has gone. Thanks for your help, i must say you are a friendly bunch, are there any sponsor stores that we get good discounts from??

anemone i would not go there just yet if its a new tank i have been told by loads not to add one till the tank is 6 month+ they have to go into a mature set up even then the clown fish might not even host it there is a wide selection fish you can keep but depending what they are you might only be able to keep up to 4 might get little more depending on how big they get there is some real nice corals out there my fav ones are zoe's but its to eveyone's taste. A tang in a 90L omg i hope you told the seller a lesson if they start up again never to keep fish like this in small tanks yellow tangs need min of 300L tank & regal tang seems to be one that ends up in a small tank they need 550L or more i wish you the best of luck and take it easy slow is the key to this hobby & loads of reading & help :)

the tank has been setup for about 9 months. The previous owner rescued the tang from a tank closure, i have found him a new home, will now be moving on Sunday. Will me hermits be ok with everything, i am also interested in star fish (sand sifting). there was meant to be one in the tank but didn't find it during move, however when moving some rocks today i found a tiny little one (around 1"?!)

not sure on star fish mate as i am sort of new to it all i have got a 90L tank and to be honest i would not house a star fish in mine maybe a diffrent member might be able to tell you more on the star fish your hermits should be fine mate i have 3 blue legged hermits i put them in thinking my tank was cycled but i was fooled they are well happy in my set up glad that yellow tang going to go to a better home. you should be able to keep a 6 line wrasse in your tank. I would sit down and think hard what you really want to keep in your set up like my self i only have them hermits for now untill my tank is ready my first two fish will be clown fish then go on from there i my self have all ready started thinking about upgrading to a 300L set up i did try and start up a 200L wile back but funds were not there at the time and did not take off to good its a good thing to start off small i think gives you a proper feel of the hobby and how to look after your tank what equipment are you running ??

Anemone's are not a good idea in a nano, they move about too damn much, and always end up where you don't want them.
The only exception is the mini-maxi nem, i have some in mine, they stay small (around 2-3 inch) they don't move much, can be really colourful and although clowns won't host in them, sexy shrimp and porcelain crabs will.

I pondered about a 6 line too, mainly because they eat bristleworms, but they are quite pugnacious and lots of people end up wanting rid of them, again i'd say better in a bigger tank.

Clowns are a good choice, yes they can be susceptible to some diseases but if you can keep your water quality good and keep your hands out as much as poss you should be fine, i'd recommend the ocellaris clown, lots of colour variants and excellent for our smaller tanks as i said to Ray just the other day. If you have two they will often pair up, one changing sex and often breeding.

Cleaner shrimp are fine with hermits, same with peppermints, they don't like each other but will set up their own turf and pepp's will get rid of any aiptasia that you may have, two cleaners can set up a cleaning station and clean any parasites off fish too, so worth getting two and see if they set up shop somewhere.

I'm not a fan of sand sifters in nanos, they don't seem to last very long unfortunately but you can get lots of substrate dwelling snails, like ceriths and nassarius and conch's, they'll keep your substrate nice and clean and keep it turned over, again some can and do breed as well.

If you go for captive bred clowns you usually find they are less likely to pick up diseases, as well as being cheaper, my lfs had some at £5 each not so long back!

be careful if you have clowns and then get a sixline....sixlines sometime like to kill clowns and other fish for fun.

Leave the 6 line out as they are little ------- and are not worth it, as said tank bred are the best to go for. Just take it slow and ask on here if not sure as you will always get an answer. Twiggy

Ok, a pair of clowns sound good, will keep 'her in doors' happy too;-) How much roughly are mini-maxi nem's? Are they easy to get hold of? How about gobys? will they be fine with the clowns? I def want cleaner shrimp and maybe some peps. Think i may have to research the starfish a bit more and get some more info before deciding on them. Thanks for all your help! Do we get discounts at any sponsor stores?

Lots of different clownfish out there but I reckon the ocellaris are best suited for the smaller tank, and go for captive bred if you can.

Mini-maxi are new on the scene, from Vietnam, they were a bit pricey at around £45 to £50, but if you look at some of the mail order places you can buy them for half that, although some of the best and brightest colours still go for a premium.

Some of the stores do give discounts to members, you could always stick a post up stating what you are after and see if any have what you want at a decent price?

Small brittlestars seem to do well, at least in my tank, i have millions of the things, and they keep spawning too, apparently its a rare sight, but not in my tank, they spawn every few weeks, and they're harmless too, usually you never see them though as they hide in the rockwork with just their arms waiving in the current hoping to grab any small particles of food, lots of the bigger stars are very predatory & can go for shrimp, snails even fish, but as I said most don't live to a ripe old age in captivity, especially the linkia blue starfish, i was tempted until i read they really are a waste of money due to their very short lifespan in tanks.
