try places like this
http://www.electronics-lab.com/ but if you want to be a real geek (like me)
order yourself a bull electrical catalogue, last time I had one(years ago)
they had plans for everything including phone jammers and stun guns lol

RS Components is the best place really for everything electronic, and maplins pretty useful for bits in a hurry too.

I used to like Maplins, but their stores around here are a joke these days, if I call in for 6 standard components i'll be lucky to walk away with two...and then one will be wrong, bring back Tandy!
When I lived down Sheffield Bardwells was the place to go, tiny shop but packed to the gills with surplus kit and components and i see they have a ebay store now, very good for all kinds of stuff.
I used to like the place in Leeds by the station, i used to spend hours in there, but as with so many they've all gone now.

Maplins are crap i use ESR electronics http://www.esr.co.uk/ or rs http://uk.rs-online.com/web/?cm_mmc=UK-PPC-0411-_-google-_-0_RS_Brand-_-RS%20components_Exact&gclid=CPOHzdOf7KgCFQkLfAodIiF8Cg

If you cant find what your looking for at esr give them a ring or fire them an email there geat lads

I have an account with RS, not used much they're good but pricey, although not as pricey as Maplins, a few months back I wanted some 3.55mm stereo plugs...i got 50 from ebay cheaper than one from Maplins!
Not heard of ESR i'll store that one in my bookmarks, I just got myself an SRD-radio kit from a guy in the states who designed it, an amazing piece of kit, really looking forward to getting it built, but its all surface mount, and the tiniest surface mounts i've ever seen, had to shell out on one of those headband magnifiers as my eyesight gets worse and worse trying to work with components the size of a grain of salt gets harder & harder!

We use RS as were in the trade, there isn't much they cannot supply, once you have the catalogue it is easy to order and get a delivery, I personally rate them highly, maplins are ok by me, nothing special but ok if something is needed quickly, provided they have it of course haha.

best way to learn is to just build something.

http://www.diy-electronic-projects.com/
http://www.circuit-diagrams.com/
http://www.elecircuit.com/audio/12-Volt-30-Amp-PSU-371.html

think i'm gonna sticky this thread and move it to the diy section, it's very usefull and doesn't deserve to be lost in the lounge.

I always wanted to make a van der graph generator maybe one day

Remember leaning a mates bike on an elec fence one day i nearly peed my self laughing he caught some great dance moves

Then there was the yts lad when i was a mechanic working on pugs, the diagnostic bay was near the loo and this little git was always on the bog so we shoved some wire in the ht lead and wrapped the other end around the outer bog handle whilst he was in the loo never used it again for some reason
