I am new to this and urgently require advise, My tank has been up and running since October, introdused 2 clown fish at the end of December which where doing fine until around 3 weeks ago. They appeared to look like they where covered in white slime and the clear coating that can be seen around the edge of there whole body seemed to dissapear. We took a water sample in and this showed a low PH reading which we raised using a ph buffer however the damage had been done and the poor fishes died. I have performed a number of changes since and constantly monitored the water and everything has now been fine for 2 weeks.
We have 2 days ago purchased 2 new Clown and I fear the smaller of the two is showing the same symtons, the other fish (yellow tang, scotter and clown) all appear fine.
Please help.

Thankyou for replying Macca.
I've checked this web site however can't seem to find the same description as what my fish is suffering with. Maybe I'm reading the symtoms wrong.
I fear my larger clown now appears to be covered in the same dust like covering as his smaller friend.
Should have said earlier what a fantastic web site this is, been reading the posts over the last few months trying to soak up some of the knowledge!

Did they show sign's of increased respiration at all and did the 'white slime' look like an excessive slime secretion?

Breathing does seem a little more difficult however the slime looks more like a white powder coating. He's not eating. not looking promising:(

Could be Brooklynella hostilis (clownfish disease)
Google the above and see if you recognise any symptoms.
It can self re-produce so could point towards why your new clown is suffering the same symptoms.

Thanks, I will read up now. Wish I hadn't put any more fish in the tank, thought all was ok as I've changed water around 6 times and had water tested which all was fine.... Hope he's still here tomorrow. :(

'Brooklynella hostilis', been reading and this does seem to describe the symptoms, I'm now highly concerned as my yellow tang does "look" fine but I have noticed how she's been rubbing herself against the rock. Got a horrid feeling.:(
Lights are out for the night now, I'll have my fingers crossed all night and I think best thing would be to start with a freshwater bath first thing.
I feel so guilty, If I'd have known why my first clowns dies I'd never have put more fish in the tank...
Fingers crossed eh

Hi George It could have been brought on by stocking to fast, as you say its only been running a few months and you already have 4 fish in there. If you stock to quickly your water wont have time to catch up with the bio load, what is the size of your tank and if its smaller than 90/100 gallon its to small for a Yellow tang. Dont believe your LFS when they say you can keep a YT in a small tank as they are making money and not caring for the fish. HTH. Eric:)

as already stated sounds like brooklynella disease which can be treated if caught in the early stages but you would have to put it in a quarantine tank to treat it.derek
