my problem is my tank is only 4ft x 1.5 x 1.5 and wanting to use the space as much as poss and hope to reduce none swimming / dark under wier areas etc.....

i want the full syphon/overflow method to keep as quiet as possible, obviously avoiding build up at the bottom of the wier (mulum?) etc without having to have a large wier and drill holes in the glass right next to eachother.....

hope the design makes sense, needs 1 hole in the bottom of the tank and a small wier and 1 hole in the back of the tank

LHS is looking straight on, RHS is from the side, blue is weir, green is syphon pipe coming out the back of the tank at the bottom of the wier, red is overflow trickle pipe going out the bottom of the tank...yellow would be egg crate or something

http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/tt234/mattjames1980/overflow.png

it means getting away with a small wier and holes not having to be drilled too close together...i'm prob going to put an emergency overflow pipe on the right hand side of the tank to a level just above that of the weir (but below the tank rim obviously)

opinions on a design idea....flaws, suggestions anything welcome...

Don't know how much space you would gain by not having a weir, but I would rather loose that space than look at the pipe work.

Have you seen the weir in mine matt, I have the pipes going through the back pane then in to a small weir at the top

The other reason people have weirs from top to bottom is if the tank connector fails then its not all of the tank water that gets emptied just the water in the weir

If you do as reefgeeks and have both holes through the back then you can still do a twin pipe(silent) and also have a reduced sized weir possibly no bigger than half the tanks height x 3" x 3".

Im with others not gaining much by having the pipe internal

Will try and do a better pic. The internal pipe would be clear acrylic. But no will have another go at a couple designs and measure up. Concerned about how close the holes would have to keep the weir small but not affect the strength of the glass etc

Eric (Tanagman ) is the rogs rollox at cutting holes and knowing about where and how big to drill, Mines silent as well just with the one pipe system the only water noise i hear is the water trickling over the weir

Like the design of the weir keV never seen it before

Its an Eric special lol

The glass was already drilled on the back we were going to plug it but thought of the tank connectors and hassle should they fail anything drops in the weir etc

Tank level only drops by around 1" when powers off

We maybe should of had the pipe in the top of the tee slightly longer as were getting salt creep out of the cap on the top of the pipe, Might shove a 50mm straight connector on it to lift it up slightly as the cap is not welded on, In the top of the cap we have a 12mm tap screwed in

What if it gets blocked? 2nd pipe is failsafe if pipe blocks and return pump from sump is still going

Blocked 50mm pipe no chance had a fish down there the other week it got past between the glass and the comb ended up in the filter sock got it back out and put it back in the main tank just swam off lol

I am thinking on this idea with mine now I already have a single holed drilled at the bottom but I want another hole drilled for the safety reasons then another holed drilled for the return I am liking this idea myself you got any mire pictures of it all please KeV and I will see uncle Eric when he comes around :-)
