what's the best way to position your powerheads? Let's say I have 4 of them and the live rock is in the middle of the tank which is a jewel 260(bow front). Any suggestions or diagrams would be much appreciated!

Hi,
Try and get a nice open structure for your rock, this way the flow from your powerheads would be put to the best use.
I have 3 in my tank - one behind reef at bottom, two at top at rear of tank, pointing towards front of tank - this creates good turbulance.

Hi
As Ian says a good open structure really helps with flow.
A good idea it to try and get currents going in lots of directions and have a good flow which will help take any suspended matter to a skimmer.
Flow is one of the most important factors to your tanks health.

Top, Middle, Bottom or all 3 FJ?

Hi
I would go for all 3!
Top to create a good amount of surface agitation which willhelp with oxygen levels.
Middle to take away any detritus and feed to the skimmer.
Bottom to stop and build up of detritus.
Cheers

well, thanks for all the suggestions. I shall mess around with different set-ups until I'm happy... correction, until the fish are happy!

Read my article "Going with the Flow" in a back issue of Marine World. This deals with powerhead positioning.

I too have a Juwel 260. I started with the maxi-jet pumps, and then the seio, but could never find the right flow for the tank. I added a Tunze 6060 and was instantly satisfied. Now even shy fish come out to play in the flow. The Tunze pumps really do make a difference to the tank, I always found the Maxi's hard to place and the flow was to direct for me. I would consider looking into one of the tunze pumps, the 6060 goes for about £90 ish, and is well worth it. The polyp extention on the corals is much better. The Seio pumps are good, and a great alternative to the tunze, but I always have problems starting them back up if I have to stop them for maintenance. I'm currently running 1 x Seio 620 (will be replaced when I have more money) and 1 x Tunze 6060 and the flow is ace.
